OpenAI has just introduced “dots”, agents with their own computer in the cloud that connect to several thousand applications and work continuously, even when nobody writes to them. Each learns, the provider says, “what is good” in the eyes of the person directing it.

The example accompanying the announcement is modest. A tester had forgotten to invoice a publication. His agent noticed, prepared the invoice, then sent it after he gave his approval. The story comes down to this detail: the agent prepares, the human authorizes, the agent executes.

The control mechanism is carefully described. When the agent works in the background, it has access only to read-only tools, which cannot send a message or modify content. Custom rules allow each type of action to be authorized, submitted for approval or blocked. Some actions, such as changing a password, remain permanently in the user’s hands. The provider itself makes clear that these agents can make mistakes and that all important work must be reviewed.

For a luxury house, this architecture recalls the hierarchy of a workshop. The head of the workshop prepares, the master approves, and some signatures cannot be delegated. What is at stake, then, is not the automation of a profession. It is deciding where to draw the line between what can be prepared independently and what requires a human face.

That line is a leadership decision, not a technical setting. A letter to a loyal female client, a reply to a journalist, a price adjustment in a boutique: each commits the house’s name in a particular tone. Agents promise to learn that tone through repetition. But someone must first have defined it for them, with words, examples and prohibitions. Houses that have never put their own way of speaking into writing will discover that an agent needs it in writing.

The question left open by the announcement remains: how far will a house accept a third party, even one made of silicon, preparing its actions in its absence, and how many times a day will it still want to sign for itself?

An assistant that no longer waits to be called changes in nature.
