Pink and green hair, skin that turns blue and becomes covered in scales, a lace pacifier turned sleep mask: for her first show, Lea Waldberg makes the doll a creature.

A first show, obsessions grown ripe

Pop Mutation, LEAWALD’s Spring-Summer 2027 collection, is Lea Waldberg’s first show. The press release presents it as the meeting point and extension of her creative obsessions, developed over recent years. Her visual language, it says, finds its full expression here: exaggerated femininity, diverted objects, a strong affinity with surrealism.

In this universe, the body becomes a playground and a field of transformation. One will retain the intention more than the demonstration: it is not about dressing a body, but about giving it a space in which to deform.

The comparison with pop dolls is no accident: it is the figure of a manufactured body, styled, repainted, that can be changed at will. The collection keeps the play, but adds a gentle unease, that of metamorphosis.

From hair to creature

It all begins with a fascination with the organic. Hair and skin, their textures and contours, serve as the starting point for a playful mutation. Hair takes on pink, green, unexpected shades. Skin, first reproduced with almost lifelike precision, turns blue, sculpts itself and becomes covered in scales.

The familiar slides gradually towards the strange, somewhere between the pop doll and the fantastical creature. The hair creations are among the collection’s most striking expressions. They culminate in the sculpted bodysuit evoking bluish skin, worn by Fluffy Bidulle for the final walk.

Objects change scale

In this imaginary world, objects change size and migrate onto the body. After the 3D glasses designed for the chest, a sleep mask this time dresses the body. Lingerie goes beyond its usual functions to become a language in its own right: lace meets ornaments and pockets shaped like knickers, and shoes take the form of a thong. Each transformation extends the same desire to play with reality, with humour and sensuality.

Faux leather, latex and satin make up a wardrobe of shiny surfaces that, in turn, evoke skin. The materials answer one another in silhouettes that the press release describes as sexy, daring and deeply feminine. The pieces are entirely handmade, in an instinctive and artisanal approach where experimentation guides each transformation.

Garments conceived as characters

Lea Waldberg draws on her experience as a stage costume designer. She imagines her garments as characters to embody: the pop star, the doll and the creatures meet here, between the extravagance of performance and the childlike joy of dressing up.

With Pop Mutation, LEAWALD brings these explorations together for the first time in a single collection, without giving up the spontaneity from which they were born. The press release sees in it an invitation to transform, to exaggerate and to make clothing a space of freedom.

One question remains that the show raises without answering: what becomes of an obsession when it leaves the studio and has to hold up on a runway? The photos, by Sveta Spirit, give a first clue.

For a first collection, the wager is clear: smooth nothing out. Years of research are laid out together, with their excess, their humour and their sensuality, and the brand says it is keen to preserve the spontaneity from which they were born.
