In 1953, in Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend<\/em>, Marilyn Monroe whispered: \u201cTalk to me, Harry Winston, tell me all about it.\u201d The line was not gratuitous: it took up almost word for word an advertisement of the New York Maison, which then claimed that when one speaks of diamonds, the name that follows is invariably its own. Seventy-three years later, Harry Winston takes up this phrase to christen its new high jewellery collection. The choice says something that the stones, however rare, do not say on their own: the Maison builds its present legitimacy by replaying its own commercial past rather than by betting on novelty alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This past, the Maison owes to a sourcing practice established in the 1920s, at a time when the diamond market remained dominated by a small number of players. Harry Winston turned to the auctions of private collections, buying entire parures at the period’s most important sales, removing the stones from settings judged outdated, then recutting and remounting them in contemporary styles. The approach, unconventional for the time, made him appear regularly in the American regional press \u2014 a visibility that established his reputation well before Cosmopolitan crowned him \u201cKing of Diamonds\u201d in 1947, in recognition of transactions around stones that became legendary: the Jonker, the Lesotho, the Hope, the Taylor-Burton. The Duchess of Windsor would write to him, in a phrase that remained in the Maison’s archives: \u201cMy friends tell me you have such beautiful things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is this material \u2014 method of acquisition, reputation built stone after stone, the Hollywood mythology of red carpets \u2014 that the collection Talk to Me<\/em> stages through contemporary pieces. The most revealing gesture of the approach is, moreover, not a new creation: it is a Twist bracelet dating from the 1960s, from the Maison’s archives, reimagined for the occasion. More than one hundred and fifty emeralds, cut as brilliant, pear and marquise, unfold in a continuous twisted motif, set in a minimal amount of platinum and eighteen-carat yellow gold \u2014 a technical choice that leaves the metal almost invisible to preserve the fluidity of the design. Putting an archive piece back into circulation rather than designing a new one is an editorial wager as much as a jewellery one: it asserts that the Maison’s history is itself a deposit of creative material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collection’s new pieces take up this same vocabulary of quantified rarity. A necklace brings together an oval 29.09-carat Para\u00edba tourmaline, of an electric blue-green hue, at the heart of a plastron of diamonds and square emerald-cut yellow diamonds \u2014 out of ten thousand diamonds mined, a single Para\u00edba tourmaline is discovered, a ratio that alone explains why the stone remains rarer than the diamond on which it rests. Another necklace features a 40.81-carat radiant-cut yellow diamond, a cut that combines the silhouette of the emerald cut and the brilliance of the brilliant cut. A pair of Cluster earrings combines two Colombian cabochon-cut emeralds of 17.79 and 17.25 carats \u2014 bringing together two stones of this size almost identical in hue and purity is a matching exercise rarely documented elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the collection claims, by implication, is a continuity: that of a team of gemmologists who, still today, travel the world in search of stones capable of extending this genealogy. The question raised by Talk to Me<\/em> goes beyond the calendar of high jewellery launches alone: it asks how a century-old house chooses to date its own legitimacy \u2014 by the stone of the day, or by the accumulation of a century of transactions told like a novel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out of ten thousand diamonds mined worldwide, a single Para\u00edba tourmaline is discovered. The 29.09-carat oval stone at the centre of the collection’s necklace exceeds this threshold of statistical rarity \u2014 which explains why it occupies, in the plastron of diamonds surrounding it, the place normally reserved for the most precious stone of a parure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
