Laphroaig’s new expression is part of the *Strong Characters* series, each chapter of which looks back at a figure from the distillery’s history. The second is devoted to Dugald Johnston, who took over its management in 1857 when he was only twenty-one. The tribute provides the story; the ageing provides the substance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike blends that layer several types of wood to multiply aromatic effects, this edition claims a single maturation: bourbon barrel in American white oak for thirty-five years. This continuity matters more than the adjectives associated with rarity. It allows one to read the relationship between Laphroaig’s peated signature and the patient influence of American wood, without adding a second family of casks as an aromatic shortcut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The available sheet describes notes of pastry, apple, cherry, spices and raisins, over the distillery’s smoky framework. This sensory reading remains subjective by nature; the defensible fact lies elsewhere: very few lots reach such an age while retaining an identity coherent enough to be bottled under a standalone reference. The limitation to five thousand five hundred bottles materialises this selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The packaging, moreover, avoids the simple anniversary register. British illustrator Bill Bragg signs the label and the case, in black and white, drawing on Laphroaig’s history. Offered at nine hundred and ninety euros, *Strong Characters Chapter Two* naturally belongs to the territory of collector’s bottles. But its cultural interest lies in a broader question: how does a historic distillery turn its archives into value without letting the story take precedence over the liquid? Here, the best argument remains the simplest: thirty-five years, a single type of cask, a finite number of bottles. It is in this discipline that the tribute to Dugald Johnston finds its credibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
