The exhibition is linked to Art Basel Paris, but its interest goes beyond the calendar. It shows how a beauty house turns a historic motif of its imagination into a curatorial platform.

The starting point is the “blue hour”, that interval when the light shifts without yet disappearing. Guerlain does not choose this theme at random: it has long belonged to its olfactory and visual vocabulary. By moving it into contemporary art, the House converts a sign of heritage into a space for dialogue.

The announced selection brings together very different generations, media and geographies. Annette Messager and Christian Boltanski bring a French history of memory and presence. Ann Veronica Janssens and James Turrell work directly with light and perception. Laure Prouvost, Mamma Andersson, Maarten Baas, Yoann Bourgeois, SMITH, Todd Hido and Rinko Kawauchi shift the theme towards image, body, time or space. This heterogeneity is probably the exhibition’s best argument: it avoids reducing the blue hour to a mere chromatic aesthetic.

The choice of 68 avenue des Champs-Élysées also matters. The place is at once a commercial address, House heritage and an exhibition space. At a time when Houses are multiplying foundations, residencies, prizes and artistic partnerships, Guerlain takes another path: bringing art into a space directly tied to its historic identity. This porosity between commerce, heritage and culture has become one of the most effective tools of contemporary luxury.

The partnership with Art Basel Paris reinforces this reading. It is not simply a matter of attaching a logo to an art week. The House takes advantage of a moment when Paris concentrates collectors, artists, gallerists and institutions to open its own narrative to outside eyes. The gesture is strategic: instead of speaking about itself, Guerlain creates a framework in which others produce the images, sensations and interpretations.

This logic clearly belongs to soft power. Luxury is no longer content to make objects; it seeks to weigh on representations, conversations and references. In this context, the exhibition becomes a medium. It allows Guerlain to exist in the cultural field without abandoning its own signs, while leaving the artists enough autonomy to avoid the effect of a promotional showcase.

The risk, as always in such operations, would be to turn art into a decor of legitimation. The real quality of the project will therefore depend less on the prestige of the announced names than on how the works are put in relation, the precision of the curation and the room left for tensions between the artists. An exhibition built around light can easily become spectacular; it becomes truly cultural when it produces gaps, correspondences and disagreements.

For Luxsure, this is precisely where the subject takes on its meaning. Guerlain is not only seeking to accompany Art Basel Paris. The House is gradually building a position as a go-between among heritage, creation and the public. The blue hour then works as a common language: historic enough to belong to the House, open enough to welcome artists who owe it nothing.

From 21 October to 15 November 2026, Guerlain is bringing together some thirty artists at 68 avenue des Champs-Élysées around an almost immaterial moment: the one that separates day from night.
