For its 45th anniversary, the house of Carolina Herrera could have settled for a retrospective show. It preferred to entrust its creative director Wes Gordon with telling this story in the present tense, through a Spring 2027 collection woven from three collaborations, each of which says something about its New York roots.

Presented at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, the collection starts from the world Carolina Herrera built in New York from 1981, and the women who were part of it: C.Z. Guest, Diana Vreeland, Lee Radziwill. “Forty-five years gives you an extraordinary legacy to work with,” explains Wes Gordon, who says he wanted to ask what this collection of “Swans” reincarnated in contemporary New York looks like today, between professional commutes and evenings out.

In terms of materials, the collection embraces this stretch between day and evening. Elongated jackets and flared A-line skirts structure the silhouette, while tweed, cotton poplin, gabardine and denim anchor the daytime wardrobe. Chiffon, organza, metallic lace and gazar bring the lightness needed for evening. Inlaid lace, silver lurex, embroidery and sculptural ruffles composed of hundreds of precisely cut strips of organza recall, in a new form, the house’s historic codes, notably its Pom Pom floral motif on a black ground and its signature polka dot.

But the essence of this anniversary lies elsewhere, in three collaborations that each link the collection to a specific chapter of the house’s history in New York. The first associates Carolina Herrera with the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, which authorises for the first time the use of the portrait Warhol made of Mrs Herrera, obtained in exchange for a Van Cleef & Arpels bag given by her husband. The image now adorns an embroidered mini-dress and the Jacqueline bag. The second reconnects with The New Yorker: a hand-embroidered dress recreates the magazine cover published on 27 April 1981, the day of the house’s very first show at the Metropolitan Club, turning an image of the New York past into a contemporary atelier piece. The third, finally, brings Herrera together with the jewellery house Taffin, founded by James de Givenchy, through a capsule created for the show that revives an address shared by the two houses at 954 Madison Avenue.

To stage this ensemble, the studio Bureau Betak transformed the theatre into a spring vision of Park Avenue, filled with nearly 30,000 yellow tulips, afterwards donated and turned into mulch for New York’s parks. A gesture that closes the loop of a collection conceived less as a nostalgic tribute than as a way of continuing to write, in the present, the story of a house intimately linked to its city.

It remains to be seen which of these three cultural collaborations will mark the house’s image most lastingly, beyond the time of a single anniversary show.
