In 2012, the Manufacture in Le Sentier took a quiet risk: devoting an entire mechanical line to the female wrist, without conceiving it as a reduced version of a man’s watch. Two new pieces, a Rendez-Vous Jewellery Night & Day in a confidential edition and a pared-back Rendez-Vous Hour-Minute, now extend this founding gesture, without ever raising their voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourteen years ago, mechanical watchmaking for women came down, in most houses, to an exercise in miniaturisation: a movement designed for a man’s wrist was taken, set with stones, adorned, and that was that. Jaeger-LeCoultre chose another path by launching the Rendez-Vous collection in 2012. The idea was not to decorate a man’s watch, but to design, from the very drawing of the movement, a piece that speaks at once of elegance, technical sophistication and beauty, with no hierarchy among the three. Fourteen years later, two new creations reaffirm this founding principle: the Rendez-Vous Jewellery Night & Day and the Rendez-Vous Hour-Minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first stands out for its deliberate rarity: only ten examples. Its 34-millimetre platinum case holds a dial that unfolds across several levels, hand-painted using the miniature technique, a discipline the Manufacture usually reserves for its most confidential pieces. Forty-eight baguette-cut diamonds border the case without ever overwhelming the painted motif, which gives the Night & Day complication an almost pictorial reading of day and night. Here one faces less an ornamented watch than an object in which watchmaking and painting negotiate in equal parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second creation takes the opposite stance to this rarity through a gesture of stripping back. At 29 millimetres, offered in steel or rose gold, the Rendez-Vous Hour-Minute is only 7.47 millimetres thick, which makes it one of the thinnest watches in the whole collection. Smooth bezel, engraved caseback, supple matching metal bracelet or satin alligator leather strap: every detail is conceived to disappear on the wrist rather than impose itself on it. The contrast between the two pieces, one exuberant and confidential, the other minimal and worn every day, fairly well outlines the extent of the territory the collection has allowed itself since its launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This territory was not born from nothing. Jaeger-LeCoultre readily recalls that it has always created pieces designed for men’s and women’s hands alike, and that Rendez-Vous continues this double address rather than following the logic of a derived range. The two novelties are, moreover, showcases for the Manufacture’s M\u00e9tiers Rares workshop, where complex decoration and hand finishing are still practised on the scale of the craftsman rather than that of the series. An advertisement from 1937, brought out again for the occasion, shows that the Maison’s relationship with its female clientele is nothing new; it has simply changed its vocabulary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One question remains, broader than these two watches: in a watchmaking industry that multiplies reissues and spectacular formats, it is perhaps in discreet fidelity to an idea, that of a femininity that needs neither to be miniaturised nor theatricalised, that the real avant-garde lies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
