Aegean Airlines belongs to the second category: at the Langham Hotel in London, the Greek airline has just received, for the fifteenth consecutive year, the title of best regional airline in Europe at the Skytrax World Airline Awards.

The figure deserves a closer look, because this is not a jury of professionals gathered around a table for an evening, but the largest passenger satisfaction survey in the world, run by the independent body Skytrax. It is the travellers themselves, not the airlines or their shareholders, who choose the winners each year, which earns the ceremony its nickname, the “Oscars of aviation”. That the same regional airline should take the same title fifteen years running, and sixteen times in total in twenty-seven years of existence, is less a one-off performance than a discipline established over time. The London ceremony, far from the glitter one sometimes imagines for this kind of distinction, brought together representatives of the airline alongside members of its cabin crew, a choice that says clearly enough where Aegean locates the source of its award: not in a marketing department, but in the daily work of those who welcome passengers on board.

Founded in 1999, Aegean has established itself as Greece’s leading airline without ever seeking to rival the sector’s giants in size. Its fleet of 87 aircraft, including the latest Airbus A320neo and A321neo, serves 164 destinations across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa from seven bases, in Greece and abroad. In 2025, the airline and its subsidiary Olympic Air carried 17.3 million passengers, for revenue of more than 1.8 billion euros, figures that place it in the category of regional airlines, but with an ambition of service that is anything but secondary. The airline also retained its fourth place in the world ranking of the best regional airlines, a rank it holds year after year without ever ceding ground to the sector’s newcomers, often better capitalised but less consistent in the quality perceived by travellers.

From France, this ambition translates into a network that has grown denser year after year: up to 52 direct flights a week from nine cities, from Paris to Deauville by way of Lyon, Bordeaux or Nantes, to Athens, Heraklion and Thessaloniki. A member of Star Alliance since 2010, Aegean has built its reputation less on brilliance than on regularity, a quality that the great houses of luxury, in other fields, cultivate with the same discretion. Michalis Kouveliotis, the airline’s deputy chief executive, chose to speak of commitment rather than triumph on receiving the distinction, evoking twenty-seven years of trust granted by passengers rather than a feat of a single season. This structured presence on French territory says a great deal about the airline’s strategy: rather than multiplying secondary routes, it has chosen to consolidate a legible network, designed for regular travellers as much as for tourists leaving for the Greek islands.

One question remains, which the repetition of the same prize, year after year, leaves open: how far can such a level of demand be sustained without ever seeing it become commonplace, either for the teams who carry it daily or for the travellers who end up considering it a given? For the moment, Aegean seems to have made this question an engine rather than a risk.

There are trophies one wins once, by luck or by fashion, and there are those one wins fifteen times in a row.
