In Barbagia, Su Gologone Experience Hotel will close this winter and reopen only in early April 2027. A seasonality it embraces, inherited from the Palimodde family since 1967, which sets this discreet address apart from the year-round hotel model.

In the heart of Barbagia, a mountainous inland region of Sardinia that has remained apart from the seaside circuits, Su Gologone Experience Hotel has never sought to stay open all year. The house closes for the winter season and reopens in early April, a rhythm that has structured its operation since it was founded in 1967 by Giuseppe “Peppeddu” Palimodde and his wife Pasqua. Its 69 rooms and suites, built in a traditional Sardinian architecture, have over the decades shaped what the family calls a unique model of hospitality — accommodation, gastronomy, the spa and cultural experiences form one and the same gesture there, rather than juxtaposed offerings.

A second generation, the same principle

The transmission did not entail a break in format. Under the impetus of Giovanna Palimodde, the hotel has been extended by Le Botteghe di Su Gologone, a group of boutique-workshops where ceramics, textiles and art objects made by local craftswomen and craftsmen are gathered. Visitors practise there rather than merely look: the Botteghe offer creative workshops designed to let people discover, gesture after gesture, a Sardinian know-how that cannot be told only in the dining room. The hotel and the Botteghe work as the two sides of one art of living, where tradition, creation and discreet luxury answer one another without apparent hierarchy.

Closing as a choice, not a constraint

The establishment has been distinguished by an Excellence Award from Condé Nast Johansens and selected among the Italy’s Best Awards of Travel + Leisure magazine, two recognitions that concern less the décor than the constancy of a family model almost sixty years old. That constancy lies precisely in the fact that Su Gologone does not seek to optimise its annual occupancy rate: closing in winter means giving the Botteghe time to produce, the craftspeople time to work without the pressure of service, and the house the chance to reopen each spring with something to show rather than something to repeat.

Detail — 69 rooms and suites, founded in 1967, winter closure and reopening planned for early April 2027.

One question remains, which the coming season will settle: if Giovanna Palimodde continues the expansion of the Botteghe, Su Gologone could become less a hotel with a workshop than a workshop with rooms — a reversal that, in Barbagia, would look less like a revolution than a return to the order of things.
