For the first time, the public could bid from outside the room.

At the Seagram Building, the Foundation describes a pool turned into a meadow, with honeycombs and wildflowers. Colman Domingo hosted the evening, Lydia Fenet led the auction, Rita Ora sang and Paris Hilton took the decks for the after-party. The setting is what one expects of a gala. What changed this year lies in the calendar: an online sale, open to the public from 1 to 14 September, with a leotard signed by Simone Biles and worn at the 2021 US Classic, a limited-edition Gucci Giglio bag, a Brioni experience at the Cannes Film Festival, a Saint Laurent trip to Paris and a made-to-measure McQueen outfit tied to the House’s return to London Fashion Week for autumn-winter 2027. The room ceases to be the limit of giving. The file does not say what this open sale raised, nor whether it attracted bidders the dinner would never have reached.

This opening also recalls what this dinner is. The lots in the in-room auction come from Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga and Pomellato, the guests arrived dressed by the same Houses, along with Saint Laurent, McQueen and Brioni, and wearing Boucheron and Pomellato jewellery. It is the usual model of the charity gala, and there is nothing illegitimate about it. But the announced total adds together the generosity of the guests and the in-kind contribution of the Houses, and nothing makes it possible to separate them. To judge this figure, one would need to know the share of donated lots, the cost of the evening and the net sum paid out. None of these elements is given.

What is given is a cumulative figure: more than 20 million dollars over five years. François-Henri Pinault, chairman of Kering and of the Foundation, makes it, according to the July announcement, a tool for funding the associations and mobilising a wider community. It remains to be seen what those millions have produced, and the examples provided do not use the same measure.

In 2022, part of the funds went to the National Network to End Domestic Violence, which publishes WomensLaw.org, plain-language legal information, state by state. The site received 4.7 million visitors in one year, and its email line, staffed by lawyers in English and Spanish, helped thousands of people. In 2023, the grant to the Malala Fund supported seven Afghan organisations, not named for their safety, which teach by radio, television and digital means, in Dari and Pashto, as well as in classes held discreetly at the homes of women teachers. The Foundation estimates at two million the number of girls who followed these lessons, and at around 4,000 those who studied with some 115 teachers. These two figures do not describe the same thing: following a broadcast and attending a class are two forms of access. As for the four 2025 beneficiaries, Sanctuary for Families, FreeFrom, the Violence Intervention Program and Equality Now, the file speaks of “change”, of vocational training in New York and of legal support in Latin America, without a single figure. The “more than 3 million” women and children reached in nearly twenty years covers all of the Foundation’s partnerships in six countries. It does not measure the effect of the dinner alone.

The dinner therefore proves one established thing: Kering’s ability to bring together, each year, Houses, personalities and bidders around a cause, for sums that are rising or stable depending on the year. The effect on survivors, for its part, rests mainly on figures declared by the Foundation and its partners, calculated on different scopes. It will be verified in the associations’ reports, well after the evening.

The four 2026 beneficiaries: Activating Change (violence against people with disabilities and deaf people, the only American organisation dedicated to it), Fondo Semillas (women’s groups in Mexico, for 35 years), JBWS (helpline, emergency shelter and follow-up in Morris and Passaic counties, in New Jersey, for half a century), The New York Women’s Foundation (young women and gender-nonconforming young people aged 15 to 26, in New York’s least well-resourced neighbourhoods).

Kering announces more than five million dollars raised at its 2026 dinner.
