There is a quiet irony in Leica’s gesture: bringing out of the shadows, under the spotlights of an event-style launch, a lens whose original reason for being was precisely never to be seen. The Elcan 66mm f\/2, ancestor of the Summicron-M 66mm f\/2 announced for 3 September 2026, was designed in the late 1960s under a classified contract placed by the US Navy with Ernst Leitz (Canada) Ltd. Its mission was in no way aesthetic: to equip covert reconnaissance photography operations, at a time when the Cold War was also played out through lenses capable of capturing the invisible without being noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man behind this optic is called Walter Mandler. Head of optical development at Leitz Canada, he designed this lens to order in a logic of pure engineering \u2014 precision, discretion, performance in conditions that civilian use did not require. Originally produced in only about 200 units, the Elcan 66mm f\/2 thus became, through the rarity of its distribution as much as the secrecy of its commission, one of the most sought-after lenses in the entire history of the Leica M system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Leica offers today is not an identical reissue but a reinterpretation, released in a strictly limited series of 660 units \u2014 barely more than three times the original run. The choice of number is not trivial for a house whose every limited edition works as a text for collectors to decipher: it places the object in the numerical lineage of its original rarity while making it, this time, accessible to a wider circle of enthusiasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One question remains that the press release does not pose head-on but that the object raises by its mere existence: what becomes of an instrument designed to erase every trace of its user when it becomes, on the contrary, a sign of distinction? Optical espionage in the 1960s aimed at total anonymity; the collector market aims at the exact opposite \u2014 recognition, signature, declared ownership. The Summicron-M 66mm f\/2 carries this tension within it, between a past that was meant to remain invisible and a present that wishes, precisely, to be shown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The launch, under embargo until 3 September 2026 at 3 p.m., is part of a broader Leica strategy: turning its own historical inventory \u2014 including its most confidential chapters \u2014 into desirable heritage. For collectors of M systems, the appeal will lie not only in the rare 66mm focal length, uncommon in the Leica range, but in this improbable genealogy linking a 1960s Canadian military laboratory to a boutique window in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
