By choosing the Institut du monde arabe — a masterpiece by Jean Nouvel inaugurated in 1987, with its famous mechanical mashrabiyas that filter the light from the Quai Saint-Bernard — as the setting for its 2026 edition, the Moderne Art Fair does more than find a fine frame. It poses a question: what does it say about contemporary art to confront it with one of the greatest French architectural works of the twentieth century?

The IMA: when a building is itself a work

The Institut du monde arabe is not a neutral building. Conceived to be at once a cultural institution and an architectural demonstration, it carries within it a founding tension: that between tradition (the mashrabiyyas, those screens of Islamic geometry) and modernity (the photosensitive diaphragms that automatically regulate the entry of light). Jean Nouvel wanted a building that speaks two languages at once, without trying to reconcile them.

To host a contemporary art fair in such a space is to place the works in an unintended but powerful dialogue with their surroundings. Every installation, every canvas, every sculpture is seen under a light that is literally architectured. The IMA does not let itself be forgotten.

Moderne Art Fair: positioning and ambitions

The Moderne Art Fair was built on a precise ambition: to offer an alternative to the large institutionalised fairs (FIAC, Paris+ par Art Basel) by proposing a tighter selection, younger galleries and artists at a stage of development. The format does not seek excess — it seeks relevance.

In 2026, the choice of the IMA as partner is strategically strong. It allows the fair to anchor itself in a broader cultural discourse: that of dialogue between cultures, of contemporary art as a universal language, of creation that crosses geographical and symbolic borders.

What the fair does not say

What the Moderne Art Fair’s press release deliberately omits — out of humility or calculation — is that choosing the IMA in 2026 carries a political resonance that it would be naive to ignore. In a global context where intercultural dialogues are growing fragile, where Arab institutions and spaces of Islamic culture in Europe are under symbolic pressure, organising a contemporary art fair at the IMA is an act.

An act that does not content itself with exhibiting works: it affirms that contemporary art is meant to exist in all cultural spaces, including those that carry a specific history and identity. The Moderne Art Fair, by choosing the IMA, takes a position without saying so.

An event to note

The Moderne Art Fair 2026 at the Institut du monde arabe is one of those Parisian events that deserve more than a quick visit. It invites slow wandering, a dialogue between the works on show and the building that hosts them, and the particular reverie aroused by spaces where architecture and art speak as equals.

Paris no longer needs new art fairs. But it perhaps needed this one.

Some choices of venue are worth a manifesto.
