About ten years ago, Hublot made a wager that seemed to belong more to technical demonstration than to functional watchmaking: turning one of the hardest materials in the world to work with into a collection signature. With the Big Bang Sapphire Sky Blue, limited to 100 pieces, the Nyon manufacture celebrates this decade of taming sapphire \u2014 and reminds us, in passing, why transparency remains one of the hardest luxuries to manufacture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unveiled on 8 July in Nyon, the Big Bang Sapphire Sky Blue stands out above all for what it does not hide. A 44mm case in fully polished sapphire crystal, a bezel in the same material fixed with H-shaped titanium screws, a structured sky-blue rubber strap: the watch embraces an almost total transparency, down to the matte sky-blue skeleton dial that reveals, without any artifice, the construction of the movement it houses. The case back, also in sapphire, completes the unveiling of a mechanism that has nothing to hide. This sky-blue hue, chosen to evoke a summer sky and a sense of infinity, turns an exercise in technical transparency into an almost contemplative object \u2014 a watch worn as much for what it lets you see as for what it tells you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What it lets you see, precisely, is the manufacture calibre HUB1201, a hand-wound Meca-10 movement which, since its launch in 2016, has upended the traditional codes of watchmaking. Rather than concealing its mechanics beneath a solid dial, the Meca-10 was built around the movement itself, with a fully skeletonised architecture inspired by Meccano \u2014 the mechanical construction sets that, in their time, introduced entire generations to the logic of gears. Its 223 components are arranged around two parallel barrels, offering an impressive ten-day power reserve, displayed via an unusual rack-and-pinion system: two toothed racks slide along an axis running from 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock, offering a dual display that has, across editions, become the most recognisable visual signature of the entire Big Bang Sapphire collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it is the choice of sapphire, more than the movement itself, that constitutes this piece’s true feat. The second-hardest material after diamond, sapphire crystal resists conventional machining: every shaping step prematurely wears down tools, every polishing gesture risks fracturing a block whose cost, even before it is worked, far exceeds that of steel or gold. Since 2016, Hublot has turned this constraint into a playground, moving from transparent sapphire to coloured sapphires \u2014 a feat few manufactures have managed to industrialise at this scale, since colouring the material demands a thermal and chemical mastery that Swiss watchmaking long considered too unpredictable for series production. The Big Bang Sapphire Sky Blue, limited to 100 pieces, thus illustrates less a simple aesthetic choice than a display of industrial strength embraced as such: making visible, in the very colour of the case, ten years of learning to work a material that forgives no mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brand also expresses this confidence in the most concrete terms of watchmaking: the Manufacture’s \u201c5+5\u201d warranty, among the most extensive in the industry with up to ten years of coverage, amounts to a public wager on the durability of a material the industry long deemed too fragile for everyday use. What remains is an almost philosophical question that every sapphire watch raises: what is the point of building a mechanism of such complexity if not, precisely, to hide nothing of it? At Hublot, the answer has held for ten years in a single sentence: transparency, when it is this hard to achieve, becomes itself a form of luxury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
