Behind the press release lies a more unsettled question: what is the cultivated traveller of 2026 still searching for, and why does the word “wellness” appeal to them less and less?

Travel has changed in nature. What travellers are looking for today can no longer be measured in services rendered — this observation, set out at the opening of Six Senses’s new manifesto, is not a trivial one. It comes from a Maison that built its reputation precisely on services: spas, detox programmes, meditation retreats, sleep cures. If Six Senses is questioning the very notion of the “service,” it is because something has cracked in the original promise of wellness travel.

The Problem of Institutionalised Wellness

For a decade now, the wellness industry has carried out a silent takeover of luxury hospitality. No self-respecting grand hotel opens today without a hammam, a breathwork coach, a treatment menu with forty-two options. Wellness became a revenue line, then a point of differentiation, then a commodity — with all the symbolic wear that implies.

Six Senses, founded in 1995 in Koh Samui before joining the IHG group in 2019, had been one of the pioneers of this movement. Its properties — from Jerusalem to Zermatt, from Ibiza to the Maldives — helped define what regenerative travel could mean. Today, the group appears to want to set itself apart from the very category it helped to create.

What “Reinventing” Really Means

The term used — reinventing — belongs to the register of rebranding. But it points to something more substantial: the idea that the measure of a successful stay can no longer be a checklist of treatments delivered or a number of minutes spent in the meditation room. The value of a wellness trip, going forward, would be measured in perceptible transformation, in habits that take root, in something that persists after the return home.

It is an ambition harder to promise, and harder still to verify. But for a Maison seeking to recover a form of narrative exclusivity in a saturated market, it is also the only ground still worth anything.

The Traveller Who No Longer Wants to Be Treated

There is a fatigue, among the affluent wellness devotee of 2026, with the injunction to be treated. The mandatory digital detox, the six-a.m. wake-up call for dawn yoga, the uncompromising plant-based menu — these propositions, once differentiating, have become codes as predictable as the minibar. Luxury, in this context, may now consist of returning to the traveller their own free will, of offering them a setting for restoration without imposing a method upon them.

This is the direction Six Senses appears to be taking — fewer protocols, deeper personalisation, an attention paid to what the guest actually wants, rather than to what the wellness industry has decided they ought to want.

Wellness travel is not dead. It is moulting. And the Maisons that survive this moult will be those that had the courage to question their own model before their guests did it for them.

Six Senses redefines its positioning around perceptible transformation rather than a checklist of spa treatments — a quiet admission that institutionalised wellness has run its course.

[30763

post-2091283","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-travel
["GET
