In 1981, Honda simultaneously launched a city car and its mechanical offshoot: the Motocompo<\/sup>. Designed to fit into the trunk of the compact Honda City down to the millimeter, this foldable mini-scooter weighing 42 kilograms dry, powered by a 49cc two-stroke engine producing 2.5 horsepower, solved access to the city center through nesting<\/sup>. Retractable handlebars and footrests within a rectangular fairing, a sealed shutoff valve to prevent any oil or fuel leak inside the carrying vehicle: the object embodied an era in which intermodality was invented through industrial geometry rather than digital terminals<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forty-five years later, the Japanese watchmaking division transposes this utilitarian template into its field line through the Seiko 5 Sports Field HDB010<\/sup>. The piece tightens its steel case to 36.4 mm in diameter by 12.5 mm thick, treated with a scratch-resistant black coating that reduces light reflection<\/sup>. On the wrist, this restrained format marks a clean break from the usual volumetric inflation of motoring collaborations<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dial applies the bold yellow of the original bodywork<\/sup>. A black horizontal band crosses the center to anchor the numeral indices and the double day-date window, while the typography of the word ‘AUTOMATIC’ at 6 o’clock echoes the geometric lettering designed for the scooter’s storage box<\/sup>. At 3 o’clock, the knurled crown bears the engraved word ‘TURN’, a direct reference to the fuel supply shutoff valve<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The khaki nylon strap extends this workshop semiology<\/sup>. Two industrial markings appear on it: ‘CARRYING POINT’ on the metal keeper, echoing the anchor points designed to secure the two-wheeler inside the trunk, and ‘INSERTION POINT’ on the lower strand<\/sup>. The 4R36 automatic manufacture caliber, beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz) for a 41-hour power reserve, drives the three hands protected by a domed Hardlex crystal<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transparent case back reveals the movement while displaying the screen-printed silhouette of the folded vehicle<\/sup>. Produced in 8,000 numbered pieces, delivered in a case recalling the original shipping carton, this series translates an archive of industrial design: the ingenuity of one volume that stows inside another<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
