There is a category of perfumes one does not forget. Not because they are beautiful \u2014 many perfumes are beautiful \u2014 but because they disturb something in you that you did not know could be disturbed. Tobacco Carnaval, the fifth opus in Maison Crivelli’s Myst\u00e8res Olfactifs collection, belongs to this category of disruptors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is an extrait de parfum. The maximum concentration, the one that tolerates no approximation in the composition. Perfumer Quentin Bisch, of Givaudan, worked here with one of perfumery’s most divisive raw materials: tobacco. Not the blond tobacco of cinema cigarettes, but something more nocturnal, more organic \u2014 tobacco as a leaf dried in the sun, as a scent that embeds itself in skin and fabric and returns, the next morning, like a memory you did not choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quentin Bisch, the architect of disturbance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bisch is a perfumer who is not afraid. We owe him several compositions that redefined what the general public was ready to accept olfactorily \u2014 a touch of sulfur here, an unabashed animality there. With Tobacco Carnaval, he adds to this worked tobacco a festive, almost carnivorous dimension: the carnival as a metaphor for a night in which the rules are suspended, identities blur, and seduction no longer needs to justify itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is mixed \u2014 in both senses of the word. Unisex first, designed to belong to no gender. And mixed in the sense of blended: something sweet and something harsh, festive and melancholic, like those masked balls that begin in euphoria and end in a certain silent sadness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The house and its mysteries<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maison Crivelli has built its reputation on this idea of cultivated mystery. Each opus in the Myst\u00e8res Olfactifs collection is conceived as an olfactory riddle \u2014 not a problem to solve, but a question to inhabit. The house, founded in Paris, claims a niche within the niche: perfumes for those who have already smelled everything and are still searching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tobacco Carnaval bottle \u2014 whose design had not yet been disclosed at the time of this embargo \u2014 promises to stay true to the collection’s aesthetic: rigorous and sensual, minimalist in form, maximalist in content. The 50ml version will be offered at 215 euros, the 100ml version at 370 euros. Prices in the upper range of niche perfumery, consistent with the olfactory density of an extrait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the carnival tells us<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is tempting to see in the choice of carnival as an olfactory territory a metaphor for our era \u2014 that moment when masks became a health necessity before once again becoming a matter of desire. Carnival has always been the site of this paradox: hiding in order to reveal oneself, disguising oneself in order to be more truly oneself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tobacco Carnaval will officially launch on September 3, 2026. Until then, it will remain what it perhaps fundamentally is: a promise. And the best parties are always the ones you are waiting for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
