An unmissable reference in millinery for nearly a century, Maison Michel is one of the resident Maisons d’art at Le19M, the Parisian and Aubervilliers-based venue devoted to passing on fashion’s specialist crafts. From 23 September to 13 December 2026, the Galerie du 19M devotes to it an entirely free exhibition open to all audiences, titled M\u00e9tamorphoses, les chapeaux de Maison Michel. A gesture that fits Le19M’s very purpose: making visible skills that contemporary fashion, obsessed with ready-to-wear and disposable accessories, has largely pushed into the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition is conceived as a poetic journey through forms and materials rather than a simple retrospective. Visitors follow the transformation of raw material into finished object: from the linden wood used for the blocks, to felt worked with steam, through to the ribbon and veil that complete the piece. Each stage corresponds to a precise craft and a distinctive gesture \u2014 that of block-makers, hatters, straw stitchers or milliners \u2014 so many rare skills whose transmission the Maison ensures within its workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of the itinerary, berets, bibis, caps, boaters, capelines and fedoras answer one another, alongside exceptional pieces born of collaborations with the greatest fashion houses for their runway shows, as well as unpublished creations made with young designers invited to engage in dialogue with Maison Michel’s heritage and archives. This juxtaposition of heritage and contemporary creation is one of the exhibition’s strongest choices: showing that millinery is not a craft frozen in the past, but a living material capable of reinventing itself with each generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition also lingers on what the hat represents beyond fashion: a powerful marker of identity, by turns popular, spectacular or practical, whose evocative power has nourished the collective imagination well beyond the runways. Cinema, in particular, has made it a visual cue in its own right, capable on its own of forging unforgettable characters. The itinerary thus invites visitors to rediscover this narrative dimension of the hat, often underestimated, which goes far beyond its simple status as an accessory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

True to the spirit of Le19M, the exhibition does not merely show: it also invites doing. Hands-on workshops and moments of exchange will allow audiences of all ages to be introduced to the gestures of millinery, to handle materials and tools, and to gauge concretely the demands involved in making a hat worthy of the name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By choosing to devote an entire exhibition to this discreet craft, Le19M recalls a fact too often forgotten: behind every iconic piece worn on a runway lies a craft of extreme rigour, whose survival depends directly on the ability of fashion houses to make it visible, desirable and transmissible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
