From 16 October to 19 November 2026, Opera Gallery Paris is not presenting three juxtaposed retrospectives, but a story of friendship: the bond that united Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring in late-1970s and 1980s New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Few encounters in late-20th-century art history were as decisive as that of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. At first glance, everything set them apart: their generation, their trajectory, their visual language. Yet the same city, the same period and a shared conviction brought them together: that art could belong fully to the present without losing any of its force. It is this closeness, more intimate than stylistic, that Opera Gallery Paris chooses to stage with Warhol, Basquiat, Haring. An artistic friendship, from 16 October to 19 November 2026, with a public opening on 19 October from 6 pm, as part of an event organised by the Matignon Saint-Honor\u00e9 committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition brings together an important selection of paintings and works on paper made over a decade, from 1979 to 1989: precisely the period in which the three artists met, influenced one another and at times challenged one another. Three major works structure the presentation. By Warhol, Multicolored Retrospective, from the Reversal series (1979), which brings together three emblematic subjects of the artist\u2014Mona Lisa, Marilyn Monroe and the Campbell’s soup can\u2014embodying his principles of repetition and appropriation in a single work. By Basquiat, Batman (1983), a work on paper illustrating the raw immediacy and energy of his visual language. Finally, by Haring, TV Dog (1982), also on paper, which translates his instantly recognisable graphic vocabulary into a playful yet incisive reflection on mass media and contemporary life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The curatorial choice deserves attention: rather than recounting three individual trajectories brought together for the occasion, as most group exhibitions do, Opera Gallery offers another way of looking at a story we think we know. It is not the story of three parallel careers, but of a constellation founded on friendship, mutual admiration and the circulation of ideas among the three artists. This shift in focus changes the very nature of what is exhibited: the works are no longer simply career milestones, but visible traces of an ongoing dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach is supported by a revealing iconographic choice: Roxanne Lowit’s 1985 photograph showing the three men together. More than any gallery text, the image condenses the exhibition’s argument: these three artists did not merely share an art scene; they shared a social life, evenings and a rapport that nourished their respective work as much as their intersecting stylistic influences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By concentrating on friendship rather than stylistic lineage alone, Opera Gallery Paris takes the chance of making this exhibition an event that speaks as much to art-history enthusiasts as to a wider public, receptive to a simple but rarely foregrounded idea: that the greatest artistic ruptures sometimes arise less from a theory than from a friendship that continues, even today, to shape the way we look at art and images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
