After disappearing along with its island\u2019s sugar industry, the Braud & Quennesson rum distillery reopened its doors in 2022 in the far south of Martinique. Its first aged rum arrived in mainland France via an unexpected route: a Bordeaux distillery housed in a former bunker. The story of a rebirth spanning two shores.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

One hundred and fifty years, two hiatuses<\/h2>\n\n

The history of Braud & Quennesson dates back to 1866, around the former sugar mill in Le Marin, in southern Martinique. The two families that gave the brand its name were instrumental in the growth of a major industry in the region, before the decline of the island\u2019s sugar industry gradually brought the company to an end. It took a century and a half for the brand to be reborn, in 2022, on the site of the former Habitation Grand-Fonds, the island\u2019s southernmost plantation.<\/p>\n\n

This geography is not merely a backdrop. At the southern tip of Martinique, sugarcane grows under intense sunlight, low rainfall, and the constant influence of the trade winds. These conditions shape the rum\u2019s aromatic profile even before distillation. The rum distillery cultivates sugarcane on the Fond-Poterie and Palmiste plots, and it is from this raw material that its first great vintage is born.<\/p>\n\n

A blend that embraces the wood<\/h2>\n\n

Very Old Rhum introduces a new family to the lineup: aged rums with the Martinique Appellation d\u2019Origine Contr\u00f4l\u00e9e (AOC). It is a blend of rums aged for three years in three types of barrels: ex-Bourbon oak, new French oak, and\u2014more rarely\u2014barrels that previously held Cognac. After nine months of slow dilution, it is bottled at 42 degrees.<\/p>\n\n

The use of Cognac barrels\u2014in modest proportions\u2014gives the rum a profile that the tasting notes describe as featuring hints of fig, marmalade, and baked fruit, on a pastry-like base of caramelized sugar, vanilla, and praline. The house seeks not so much a display of power as a refined roundness\u2014a balance between richness and a lingering finish. The bottle itself reflects this philosophy: engraved with seashells\u2014set to become the signature of the house\u2019s aged rums\u2014and topped with a stopper combining a beechwood cap and a cork body.<\/p>\n\n

The Bordeaux Smuggler<\/h2>\n\n

To reach mainland France, this rum from southern Martinique passes through the Port de la Lune. Its exclusive distribution is handled by Moon Harbour, an artisanal distillery founded in 2014 in a former bunker at the Port of Bordeaux, best known for its whiskies aged in Gironde wine barrels. The partnership makes perfect sense: a company accustomed to blending local barley with Bordeaux barrels becomes the distributor for a brand that, too, focuses on the interplay between sugarcane and cooperage.<\/p>\n\n

This convergence says something about the times. The boundaries between the worlds of spirits are blurring; a Bordeaux-based whiskey distiller can now bring the revival of a Caribbean rum distillery to mainland France, without one diluting the other. Each party finds in this partnership a guarantee of expertise and a level of exposure that isolated distilleries struggle to achieve on their own.<\/p>\n\n

It remains to be seen whether this first aged vintage will firmly establish Braud & Quennesson among the great sipping rums, or whether it will remain the inaugural effort of a house that is still young despite its founding in 1866.
