On November 1, the fleet competing in the 13th Route du Rhum \u2013 Destination Guadeloupe will set sail from Saint-Malo to Pointe-\u00e0-Pitre. Alpina, the race\u2019s official timekeeper, is commemorating the event with two limited-edition models.<\/p>\n\n

Among the competitors is French skipper \u00c9ric P\u00e9ron, sponsored by the brand, who is serving as the official timekeeper for the race, the goal of which remains to break the current record of six days, nineteen hours, forty-seven minutes, and twenty-five seconds. To mark the occasion, Alpina is unveiling the Seastrong Diver Extreme Automatic, limited to 313 pieces, which draws on the brand\u2019s maritime heritage, which began in the 1960s with the launch of the first Seastrong\u2014a model that has since become a collection in its own right.<\/p>\n\n

This model features a turquoise dial engraved with Atlantic ocean currents, a 39-by-40.5-millimeter stainless steel case, water resistance to 300 meters, a bezel with a carbon insert, and a turquoise and black Cordura-effect rubber strap, designed to withstand the conditions of offshore racing. Similarly, the Alpiner Extreme Solarmetre, limited to 513 pieces, utilizes the same solar technology developed with La Joux-Perret as the Startimer line, in a compact 37.5-millimeter case offering up to ten months of power reserve in complete darkness.<\/p>\n\n

This second edition shares the visual identity of the Seastrong Diver Extreme, with its distinctive cushion-shaped case, carbon-inlay bezel, turquoise accents on the flange, a rubber strap, and a case back engraved with the race route. By combining two different technologies\u2014traditional automatic and solar\u2014in editions linked to the same event, Alpina demonstrates a clear watchmaking strategy: tying technical innovation to recognizable sports narratives, rather than to mechanical performance alone.<\/p>\n\n

The choice of the Route du Rhum as a platform for this partnership is no coincidence for a brand that has built part of its contemporary identity around strength and endurance. Unlike other, more niche offshore races, the Route du Rhum enjoys a level of popularity in France that extends far beyond the circle of sailing enthusiasts, driven by prominent figures in the sailing world for several decades. By partnering with the race as the official timekeeper rather than settling for a partnership with a single skipper, Alpina seeks to anchor its sporting legitimacy in an event whose reputation extends beyond the watchmaking community\u2014a strategy that is riskier but potentially more rewarding in terms of visibility among the general public.<\/p>\n\n
