Woodford Reserve turns the tables with Sweet Oak Bourbon, the newest addition to its Master\u2019s Collection, which elevates American oak from a mere container to the central focus of the blend.<\/p>\n\n

This approach is nothing new for the Kentucky distillery: since the very first \u201cFour Grain\u201d release, the Master\u2019s Collection has been built as a series of deliberate experiments, with each vintage isolating a single variable in the process\u2014whether it be the grains, the distillation, or, in this case, the wood itself. Sweet Oak follows in this tradition by taking the exploration a step further, examining exactly what American oak contributes to the whiskey\u2019s aromatic profile, beyond its expected role as a vessel for aging.<\/p>\n\n

The character of this wine is first evident in its deep mahogany color, before unfolding on the nose with a rich bouquet of candied cherries, raisins, cloves, and nutmeg, tempered by hints of soft leather and toasted oak. On the palate, the bourbon shifts gears, revealing warm spices, sassafras, toasted nuts, and black tea, all within a dense structure that doesn\u2019t seek easy roundness. Woodford Reserve is able to undertake this precise process thanks to a level of expertise that is rare in the United States: the distillery remains one of the last in the country to practice triple distillation in an iconic trio of copper pot stills imported from Scotland. Designated a National Historic Site, it has built its reputation on this mastery of grain, water, wood, and time\u2014four variables that the Master\u2019s Collection takes care, season after season, to isolate in order to better understand them.<\/p>\n\n
