Ten years ago, Penhaligon\u2019s filled its fragrance collection with characters rather than scent notes. The British house, known for telling stories before selling bottles, is celebrating this anniversary by taking its most recognizable characters into a darker realm: \u201cPortraits Intense,\u201d available starting September 1, 2026, doesn\u2019t rejuvenate the collection\u2014it darkens it.<\/p>\n\n

A Decade of Olfactory Fiction<\/h2>\n\n

Since its launch, the Portraits collection has built its uniqueness on a simple principle: each fragrance embodies a character\u2014with their own psychology, excesses, and story\u2014rather than a mere pyramid of notes. Ten years later, Penhaligon\u2019s isn\u2019t content to simply reissue its bestsellers: the house has chosen to reimagine four of its most iconic fragrances in a more dramatic, almost unsettling light, using their signature accords as a starting point rather than an endpoint.<\/p>\n\n

Three characters, three excesses<\/h2>\n\n

Portraits Intense reinterprets the original fragrances in more concentrated and complex compositions, with enhanced longevity and accords enriched with new facets. One version offers a bold neo-gourmand reinterpretation; another amplifies the sensuality of the rose\u2014in a trio of extracts\u2014toward the enveloping warmth of amber and the sweetness of vanilla; a third brings the character of Mister Sam to its peak, blending plum liqueur with spiced tobacco. The result, according to the house, remains undeniably faithful to the spirit of Portraits, but viewed through a deeper, darker, almost unsettling prism\u2014a way of rediscovering ten years of storytelling in a new light rather than simply commemorating it in a conventional manner.<\/p>\n\n

The bottle: a memory intact<\/h2>\n\n

Visually, continuity takes precedence over change. The Portraits Intense collection retains the iconic animal-headed bottles and colorful fragrances that defined the original scents, now presented in subtly tinted glass to visually convey the heightened intensity of these new creations. The illustrated boxes designed by artist Kristjana Williams\u2014who has been involved in the collection\u2019s visual identity since its inception\u2014make a comeback, further developing the story unique to each character.<\/p>\n\n

A streamlined lineup<\/h2>\n\n

The collection will be available at a limited number of retail locations in France: the Penhaligon’s boutique on Rue des Francs Bourgeois in Paris, as well as the beauty sections at Le Bon March\u00e9, Galeries Lafayette Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es, Printemps Haussmann, and Sephora Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es, in addition to online sales through Galeries Lafayette, Printemps, Sephora, 24 S\u00e8vres, and My Origines.<\/p>\n\n

Most fragrance houses celebrate their anniversaries by toning down their classics to broaden their audience. Penhaligon\u2019s is taking the opposite approach: ten years after creating its characters, it has chosen to make them more unsettling.
