The classic car market loves records because they provide simple benchmarks. The 2026 edition of the Monterey auction organized by RM Sotheby\u2019s delivered plenty of them: $380 million in sales, 90% of lots sold, sixty-nine lots selling for over $1 million, and thirty-eight auction records broken. But perhaps the most interesting statistic isn\u2019t the total amount. It lies in how the most sought-after cars stood out from the rest of the catalog.<\/p>\n\n
The 1996 McLaren F1 GTR sold for $34.655 million, setting a record both for a McLaren F1 and for a British car sold at auction. Close behind, the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport sold for $18.705 million, becoming the most expensive Corvette ever to go under the hammer. Two race cars, two very different stories, but one common thread: an instantly recognizable identity, inherent rarity, and a distinct place in the history of their respective disciplines.<\/p>\n\n
This phenomenon spans the ages. The 1935 Duesenberg Model JN Convertible Coupe, built by Rollston and Bohman & Schwartz for Clark Gable, sold for $9.08 million. A 1937 Delage D8-120 S Aerodynamic Coupe, built by Pourtout, sold for $5.78 million. At the other end of the spectrum, the Driver\u2019s Philosophy collection, consisting of track cars and contemporary hypercars, totaled $53.3595 million, led by a 2023 Ferrari Daytona SP3 that sold for $17.825 million.<\/p>\n\n
This coexistence matters. It suggests that the market is not merely a generational cycle in which hypercars mechanically replace pre-war automobiles. Both categories can appreciate in value simultaneously when they combine rarity, condition, provenance, and historical significance. The cultural value of a classic car then comes to resemble that of a work of art: the object alone is no longer enough; its pedigree becomes an integral part of the work.<\/p>\n\n
Ferrari accounted for six of the top ten sales. The F50, the 288 GTO, the Enzo, the LaFerrari, and the F40 were all among the top results, while a 2026 Ferrari Luce Tailor Made, sold to benefit the Ferrari Foundation, fetched $40 million. This last result, however, should be viewed separately. A charity auction involves a philanthropic dynamic that cannot be equated without caution to the ordinary formation of a market price.<\/p>\n\n
This is precisely where Monterey becomes interesting for the luxury market. The record isn\u2019t the only factor. The market seems to be increasingly distinguishing between pieces whose uniqueness can be recounted, documented, and compared. Provenance, bodywork, racing history, the previous owner, or the car\u2019s place in a series all become factors that lend legitimacy. In a world where the supply of spectacular cars has expanded significantly, the most solid measure of rarity remains that which can be demonstrated.<\/p>\n\n
Gord Duff, president of RM Sotheby\u2019s, described demand as spanning \u201cacross nearly every make and era.\u201d Beyond the enthusiasm one would expect from an organizer, the results lend weight to this observation: bidders came from thirty-nine countries, and records were set for McLaren, Ferrari, and Porsche as well as Duesenberg and Delage.<\/p>\n\n
Monterey thus brings to mind an age-old rule of luxury: price impresses, but provenance reassures. As the most exclusive modern cars enter the used-car market, the next battle will likely be fought not only on the basis of power or limited production.
