The hillsides of Saint-Joseph have always demanded more effort than they yield. Here, the vines cling to steep granite slopes where every task requires time, precision, and often a degree of manual labor that other regions have long since abandoned.<\/p>\n\n

The 2023 vintage is a reminder of this reality. A 16-day heat wave in August, followed by torrential rain during the September harvest, put winemakers in the northern Rh\u00f4ne in a difficult position. Between winter drought, persistent summer humidity, and increased disease pressure, the growing season felt like a balancing act. Yet early results suggest that the wines retain their freshness and balance despite these challenges. <\/p>\n\n

In this context, J. Denuzi\u00e8re\u2019s 2023 Saint-Joseph Blanc stands out as an interesting interpretation of the Marsanne grape variety. Although the appellation also permits the use of Roussanne, this wine is a single-varietal expression of Marsanne. This choice allows the full personality of a grape variety\u2014sometimes overshadowed by its prestigious neighbor, Hermitage\u2014to shine through. <\/p>\n\n

A wine\u2019s origin plays a major role in defining its identity. The Saint-Joseph vineyards are situated on granite terraces facing south and southeast. This geological foundation plays an essential role in defining the white wines of the Northern Rh\u00f4ne. Granite naturally drains water, limits vegetative vigor, and promotes slow ripening, which helps preserve a certain aromatic tension despite the abundant sunshine. <\/p>\n\n

The winemaking process reflects a quest for balance between precision and texture. The grapes are harvested by hand and then pressed as whole clusters. After cold settling, 25 percent of the juice continues to ferment in barrels, while the rest remains in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place before the wine is aged on its full lees for six to eight months. This combination adds body without allowing the oak to overpower the fruit\u2019s expression. <\/p>\n\n
