Time spent in the vineyards, time devoted to aging, and the time needed before a bottle is opened. The prestige of great terroirs rests in part on this promise of patience. Yet some vintages take a different approach: that of immediate accessibility.<\/p>\n\n

Ch\u00e2teau de Ferrand\u2019s \u201cLe Diff\u00e9rent\u201d 2022 falls into this category.<\/p>\n\n

Produced at the Ch\u00e2teau de Ferrand estate, a Saint-\u00c9milion Grand Cru Class\u00e9, this wine is a blend dominated largely by Merlot, which accounts for 81% of the blend. Cabernet Franc makes up 18%, while Cabernet Sauvignon rounds out the blend at 1%. This breakdown is by no means trivial. Merlot brings volume and suppleness, while Cabernet Franc contributes to the wine\u2019s aromatic structure and overall freshness. <\/p>\n\n

The harvest took place from September 5 to October 5, 2022, a relatively long period that reflects a gradual harvest tailored to the ripening schedules of the various grape varieties. <\/p>\n\n

The tasting notes provided by the estate mention notes of blackberry, plum, and sweet spices. But the wine\u2019s true appeal lies elsewhere. What emerges between the lines is a quest for balance between intensity and approachability. The tannins are described as round and pronounced, the texture as full-bodied, while the finish retains a mouthwatering quality that prevents any sensation of heaviness. <\/p>\n\n

In the context of the 2022 vintage, this approach is significant. That year, Bordeaux experienced one of the most severe droughts in recent decades. Many wines exhibit significant concentration. The challenge, then, is to preserve drinkability without sacrificing the fruit\u2019s natural density.<\/p>\n\n

The blend reflects the wine\u2019s philosophy. With more than four-fifths Merlot, Le Diff\u00e9rent clearly embodies the identity of Bordeaux\u2019s right bank. The Cabernet Franc acts as a counterpoint here, adding tension and aromatic complexity to a naturally full-bodied base. <\/p>\n\n

The name of the cuv\u00e9e also deserves attention. \u201cLe Diff\u00e9rent\u201d suggests a departure from the traditional conventions of Grand Cru Class\u00e9 wines. It is not a break with the estate, but rather another way of expressing its identity\u2014a more immediate interpretation, less focused on aging and more on enjoyment.<\/p>\n\n

For this may be where part of the future of the great Bordeaux estates is being decided today: maintaining the high standards of the terroir while adapting to changing consumer habits. Prestige no longer rests solely on the ability to age for twenty years. It also lies in the ability to produce wines that can express themselves even in their youth.<\/p>\n\n

The 2022 \u201cLe Diff\u00e9rent\u201d seems to occupy precisely this space.<\/p>\n\n
