Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon have gradually overshadowed hundreds of local grape varieties, whose survival today depends on a handful of regions and winemakers.

In the Pyrenean foothills, Petit Courbu falls into this category.

The “Cépages d’Auteurs” cuvée from the Saint Mont appellation, however, restores it to a central role. Traditionally blended with Gros Manseng to bring finesse and balance to the wines, it becomes here the defining element of the wine. This decision stems as much from an oenological choice as from a desire to preserve the region’s viticultural heritage.

The history of this grape variety is closely tied to that of the region. According to Plaimont, its cultivation dates back to the 11th century, when Benedictine monks from the Saint-Mont monastery helped organize the local vineyards. More than nine centuries later, this continuity remains evident in the hills of the Gers, where several indigenous varieties still thrive that other regions have lost.

The vineyard is situated on deep, cool, variegated clay soils characteristic of the Pyrenean foothills. In this soil and climate context, the Petit Courbu develops a distinctive body that winemakers describe as enveloping and almost syrupy when it reaches full maturity.

The cuvée’s uniqueness is most evident in the aging choices.

The two grape varieties are vinified separately to bring out their unique characteristics. The Petit Courbu is aged in demi-muids with regular stirring for eight months before being transferred to large oak casks. The Gros Manseng continues to age in refrigerated stainless steel tanks. Only then are the two wines blended and spend an additional eight months aging in large oak casks. This gradual process allows each grape variety to retain its identity before the final blend is achieved.

Stirring the lees every two weeks for eight months is one of the most important technical steps in the production of this cuvée. By regularly resuspending the fine lees, the winemakers develop texture, body, and aromatic complexity—qualities that are particularly well-suited to the character of the Petit Courbu.

On the palate, the wine is described as having floral, mineral, and citrus notes. But its true appeal lies above all in the balance between tension and body. The acidity of the Gros Manseng complements the natural richness of the Petit Courbu, creating a white wine that defies the usual classifications of the French Southwest.

Ultimately, this vintage exemplifies a broader trend currently sweeping through European viticulture: the rediscovery of native grape varieties. In the face of increasingly uniform tastes, certain regions are now choosing to highlight what makes them uniquely distinct.

In Saint Mont, this uniqueness goes by the name of Petit Courbu.

The history of European wine is also the story of forgotten grape varieties.
