Yet some winemakers pursue a different goal: to produce wines meant to be opened without any special ceremony, enjoyed around the dinner table rather than in a collector’s cellar.

Olivier Cazenave’s Bordeaux Rouge 2024 belongs to this category.

This wine is based on a simple concept: 100 percent Merlot, sourced from two hectares of vineyards planted on clay-limestone soils on the hillsides of the Entre-deux-Mers region. Behind this apparent simplicity lies a precise vision of contemporary Bordeaux flavor. The exclusive use of Merlot here emphasizes suppleness and fruitiness rather than the tannic structure sought after in certain traditional blends.

The winemaking process follows the same approach. After destemming, the harvest is placed in stainless steel tanks. Maceration is kept to a minimum, accompanied by daily pumping over, while fermentation is limited to fourteen days. The goal is not to extract more but to preserve a clear expression of the grape. Aging then continues in stainless steel tanks with the addition of selected staves before bottling the following spring. Here again, the winemaking approach prioritizes aromatic precision and freshness over the influence of heavy oak aging.

The winery describes the wine as having a garnet color with violet hues and a bouquet centered on ripe cherry with a hint of peppermint. On the palate, the wine is described as round, light, and driven by red fruit. More than a display of concentration, it is a quest for balance.

Two factors define this vintage: a recommended aging period limited to five years and an alcohol content capped at 12.5%. At a time when many wines are becoming more powerful due to global warming, these figures reflect a commitment to preserving the wine’s vibrancy and drinkability.

This philosophy is explicitly reflected in the winemaker’s words: producing “an easy-drinking, elegant Bordeaux” has, in his view, been a longstanding priority. Behind this statement lies a broader question for the region: how can everyday Bordeaux wines continue to thrive at a time when media attention is often focused on grand crus and prestige vintages?

The answer may lie in wines like this one—wines designed to pair with cold cuts, grilled meats, or roasts; in other words, everyday uses that were long the true domain of Bordeaux.

Ultimately, the significance of this vintage extends beyond the 2024 vintage itself. It reflects a subtle yet profound evolution: the return of part of the Bordeaux vineyards to a form of self-assured simplicity, where technical rigor is no longer used to show off, but rather to achieve fluidity.

In Bordeaux, complexity has often become a selling point.
