La R\u00e9serve de Beaulieu belongs to this rare category: that of establishments that have understood that luxury is not about ostentation but about continuity. Founded in 1880, it began as a fish and seafood restaurant before becoming a luxury hotel on the French Riviera; the property has just completed a renovation that began several years ago. More than just a hotel renovation, this transformation reflects another evolution: that of the Riviera, which today seeks to harmonize heritage, contemporary hospitality, and a desire for discretion.
The renovation, carried out in collaboration with the firm Affine Design, was carried out in phases. First came the historic spaces\u2014the Restaurant des Rois and the Gordon Bennett Bar\u2014followed by the private villas Victoria and Mistinguett, and finally, most recently, the Pavillon Jardin, the guest rooms, and La Table de Julien. In less than six years, the entire estate was thus reimagined without a jarring break from its architectural heritage.
That is undoubtedly where the appeal of this transformation lies. Many historic establishments on the French Riviera today oscillate between two extremes: nostalgic \u201cmuseumification\u201d or the complete erasure of their original character in favor of an internationalized luxury that\u2019s interchangeable from Bodrum to Dubai. La R\u00e9serve de Beaulieu has chosen a more subtle path. The spaces have been redesigned, but without any theatrical flair. The rooms feature light tones inspired by the Mediterranean landscape\u2014sand, pale stone, and the light of the sea\u2014while the custom-made furniture seeks not so much to impress as to create a visual continuity with the nearby sea.
In the new rooms, the most revealing detail may not be the furniture itself, but the way the spaces interact with the outdoors. For several years now, the luxury hotel industry has been rediscovering a truth long sacrificed in favor of the spectacular: true sophistication often lies in the quality of silence, in the morning light filtered through thick sheers, and in the seamless flow between interior and landscape. Here, the views of the sea or the gardens almost become architectural elements in their own right.
The transformation of La Table de Julien also illustrates this evolution of contemporary Mediterranean taste. The former bistro-style atmosphere has given way to a more inviting space, designed around mineral materials and softer lines. Brass trellises, natural textures, a quartzite countertop, and a mural by Wanda Buosi: each element contributes to an aesthetic now widely seen in European hotels, where the decor focuses less on ostentation and more on tactile sensations.
This focus on materials is no coincidence. In recent years, quartzite has made a marked comeback in high-end interior design projects, particularly due to its natural durability and mineral variations that are more complex than those of traditional polished marble. Similarly, the use of brushed brass rather than mirror-polished metal reflects a desire to create a visually soothing atmosphere. These are choices driven more by craftsmanship than by style.
The restaurant also reflects the evolution of Julien Roucheteau\u2019s cuisine. A former chef at the Lancaster in Paris who has worked at several Michelin-starred restaurants, Roucheteau has been developing a more distinctively Mediterranean approach for several years, centered on seafood, fresh herbs, and more straightforward dishes. In Beaulieu-sur-Mer, this direction finds a natural home: the Riviera is no longer just a vacation destination; it is gradually reclaiming its status as a culinary destination.
This reopening comes at a particularly significant time for the French Riviera. Long associated with a form of ostentatious luxury\u2014yachts, high-society events, historic luxury hotels frozen in their own legend\u2014the region is now seeking a new balance. A new generation of independent and heritage hotels is reviving the idea of a Mediterranean lifestyle that is less ostentatious and more closely tied to the landscape, architecture, and rhythm of the surroundings. In this evolving landscape, La R\u00e9serve de Beaulieu retains a precious distinction: that of an independent establishment.
Since 1997, the property has been owned by Nicole and Jean-Claude Delion. This financial stability remains rare along a coastline where many hotels have now been absorbed by large international chains. The difference is often evident in the details: a consistent level of service, a loyal staff, and a less standardized approach to luxury.
With its thirty-nine rooms, suites, and villas, its Michelin-starred Restaurant des Rois, its La Prairie Spa, and its mirror-like pool overlooking the Mediterranean, La R\u00e9serve de Beaulieu continues to embody a unique aspect of the French Riviera. A Riviera less fascinated by visual spectacle than by enduring charm.
And perhaps that is what this renovation truly conveys: not a spectacular modernization, but a process of fine-tuning. Adapting a historic property to a contemporary sensibility without erasing the patina that time has already bestowed upon it.<\/p>\n\n
