With Hangrillahi, however, Manolo Blahnik takes this popular style into a more theatrical, almost Napoleonic realm. Behind this wedge sandal for summer 2026 lies less a fashion statement than an exercise in decorative memory: that of a buckle rediscovered in Italy and reinterpreted as a fragment of imperial ornamentation.

The starting point isn’t the braided-rope wedge sole—which has become an archetype of beachwear—but rather this square buckle set with Swarovski crystals. Manolo Blahnik himself describes it as an object of historical fascination: “It reminded me of Napoleon I, Josephine, and Pauline Bonaparte.” A reference that’s less anecdotal than it seems. For Blahnik, the shoe often functions as a statement accessory, almost a costume piece capable of evoking an entire era.

The design of the Hangrillahi is based on an intriguing tension between vernacular craftsmanship and the language of jewelry. On one hand: a classic espadrille base with a woven-fiber platform, a rubber sole, and a round-toed cotton upper. On the other: a decorative element typically associated with evening shoes. This clash of styles speaks to the evolution of contemporary luxury: the gradual blurring of the lines between casual footwear and formal attire.

The most subtle detail is probably the material. The cotton retains a certain simplicity to the touch that keeps the buckle from veering into ostentation. The braided cord also reflects the light from the crystals rather than letting them dominate the silhouette. The overall look remains Mediterranean, despite the presence of Swarovski crystals.

There is also, implicitly, a more cultural interpretation of this wedge espadrille. For several seasons now, luxury houses have been reimagining items historically associated with popular European pastimes—fisherman’s sandals, raffia baskets, hotel slippers, Basque espadrilles—as if luxury were now seeking its legitimacy in enduring craftsmanship rather than in industrial sophistication alone. Hangrillahi fits squarely within this trend.

At Manolo Blahnik, this approach is never entirely nostalgic. The Spanish designer continues to treat the shoe as a narrative canvas where history, theater, and design interact freely. Here, Joséphine Bonaparte meets the Mediterranean coast. Crystal meets braided cord. And the espadrille ceases to be merely a summer shoe to become a fashion statement in its own right.

Detail

Cotton upper with a round toe

Square clasp adorned with Swarovski crystals

Platform with a straw-like woven design

Rubber outsole

Summer 2026 Collection

The espadrille has long been a staple of Mediterranean summer fashion.
