At BAO BAO ISSEY MIYAKE, a bag is less of an accessory and more of a study in structure. Since the line\u2019s launch in 2010, the Japanese fashion house has pursued a single vision: transforming a flat surface into a mobile form. With CITY, unveiled this spring, this exploration moves away from organic forms to draw inspiration from urban architecture. <\/p>\n\n

The series is based on a cubic structure with compact proportions. The seams cut across the surface like a circulation path. The volumes appear unfinished, almost modular, like a neighborhood under construction. Whereas some BAO BAO pieces previously played with fluidity or the refraction of light, CITY introduces a more mineral-like density. <\/p>\n\n

The material plays a major role in creating this impression. The textured surface evokes raw concrete facades or sandblasted stone walls. The embossed details create a subtle relief, reminiscent of the irregularities seen in certain contemporary architectural finishes. The color palette\u2014Stone Gray, Urban Black, Sand Beige, and Terracotta\u2014extends this urban aesthetic without falling into the technological monochrome often associated with contemporary Japanese design. <\/p>\n\n

This connection between fashion and architecture is nothing new for Issey Miyake. As early as the 1970s, the Japanese designer viewed clothing as a space in motion rather than simply a silhouette. His work with pleating, as well as his fascination with modular structures and transformable volumes, has had a profound impact on contemporary textile design. BAO BAO is a direct heir to this philosophy: an object designed to move, reconfigure itself, and change its shape depending on its use. <\/p>\n\n

The video accompanying the launch of CITY perfectly captures this idea of constant transformation. A CD case and a shoulder bag emerge from an almost abstract setting. Then the shoulder strap becomes an escalator. Silhouettes cross the screen. The shapes multiply until they form an entire city. The film does not seek to tell a story; it constructs a perspective. This is a rare approach in today\u2019s accessory campaigns, which are often limited to static images or simple product placement. <\/p>\n\n

Perhaps the most interesting detail is the scale of the pieces. With compact dimensions\u2014115 \u00d7 115 \u00d7 60 mm for the clutch, 170 \u00d7 115 \u00d7 60 mm for the shoulder bag\u2014CITY is part of a broader shift in our relationship with personal items. The contemporary bag is becoming smaller but gaining symbolic significance. It no longer carries an entire life; it accompanies a fast-paced, urban, fragmented way of moving through the city. In this context, BAO BAO retains a unique quality: its pieces continue to be conceived as modular systems rather than status symbols. <\/p>\n\n

In Paris, the collection will be available starting in May at the ISSEY MIYAKE store on Rue Fran\u00e7ois Ier. It\u2019s a fitting location for a line that views the city not as a backdrop, but as a compositional principle. <\/p>\n\n
