Eight beehives. Hundreds of thousands of bees. And a honey with salty and woody notes that can only be enjoyed during limited periods. This isn\u2019t just a green marketing gimmick\u2014it\u2019s a philosophy of hospitality. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

In the mangroves of the Indian Ocean<\/h2>\n\n

The Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita spans more than 10 hectares along the lagoon, in the heart of a mangrove forest that the property has protected since its opening. Following an eight-month renovation, the resort is launching a beekeeping program in partnership with a local beekeeper. Eight hives of Apis mellifera\u2014non-stinging honeybees\u2014have been established in this protected natural environment. The choice of the mangrove forest is not merely symbolic: it is here that pollination has the greatest impact on the regeneration of coastal forests and the preservation of marine wildlife. <\/p>\n\n

How Environmentalism Shapes Experience<\/h2>\n\n

Rick Bonnier, the resort\u2019s marine environment manager, puts it plainly: \u201cMangroves are among our most precious ecosystems. By introducing pollinators, we\u2019re strengthening a natural cycle that\u2019s essential to life, both on land and underwater.\u201d What\u2019s interesting about this project is that it doesn\u2019t stop at a mere statement of intent. It takes shape on guests\u2019 plates\u2014raw, 100% organic honey, harvested two to three times a year, served at breakfast on homemade pancakes, in artisanal teas, and with fresh yogurt. The sustainability program literally becomes a culinary experience. <\/p>\n\n

Kayaking as a Tool for Raising Awareness<\/h2>\n\n

The initiative goes beyond the dining table. Kayak excursions allow guests to paddle through the mangroves and observe the hives in their natural habitat. A second phase calls for the installation of ten additional hives, ultimately bringing the bee population to nearly one million bees. The resort would thus become a sanctuary dedicated to mangrove bees on the island of Mauritius. <\/p>\n\n

This project is part of the broader \u201cFour Seasons for Good\u201d program, which also funds a seagrass nursery in partnership with the Odysseo Foundation and a seahorse conservation program. What the Four Seasons Mauritius is quietly building resembles a model: that of a hotel that treats its natural environment not as a backdrop, but as a partner. Honey is the visible symbol of something deeper\u2014the conviction that 21st-century luxury cannot come at the expense of the natural world around it. <\/p>\n\n
