The 2020 Les Allées de Cantemerle belongs to this category: a wine made primarily from the young vines of Château Cantemerle, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, and designed to be enjoyed without having to wait twenty years.

The setting is the Haut-Médoc, just outside Bordeaux, on an estate whose history extends far beyond the wine label. Château Cantemerle is listed among the 1855 Grands Crus Classés as a fifth-growth of the Haut-Médoc appellation, according to the 1855 Council of Grands Crus Classés. The Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux describes its vineyard as resting on a foundation of deep, siliceous Quaternary gravel—these well-drained soils provide Cabernet Sauvignon with one of its most distinct expressions.

The press release specifies that the estate covers 200 hectares, including 98 hectares of vineyards planted on gravel and silica soils, with a planting density of 7,800 vines per hectare and pruned using the double Guyot method typical of the Médoc. The vines, with an average age of 40 years, ensure the wine embodies continuity rather than a break with tradition. The second wine, meanwhile, does not aim for the same solemn structure as Cantemerle; it retains its core character, freshness, and tannic profile, but makes them more accessible.

The 2020 vintage began nearly two weeks earlier than average, in a season initially marked by rain and then accelerated by sunny days. The July heat was balanced by a few showers in mid-August; in early September, the temperature fluctuations between day and night helped the berries ripen and the tannins soften. The harvest took place from September 14 to 30, a window long enough to preserve the desired balance.

The blend speaks volumes about the winemaker’s intent: 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are completely destemmed, hand-sorted, fermented at 24 to 28 °C for six to eight days, then macerated for 20 to 25 days. Aging, divided between tanks and barrels, prevents the wood from leaving an overly pronounced imprint. This is an important detail: at a time when Bordeaux is often seeking to restore drinkability without losing its structure, the choice to preserve the fruit becomes almost a stylistic statement.

The resulting wine is delectable, elegant, and harmonious, with a structure balanced by freshness. Nothing here calls for exaggeration. The 2020 Les Allées de Cantemerle can be understood as a transitional wine: a bridge between the young vines and the classified heritage, between approachability and Médoc character, between the richness of the fruit and the rigor of a gravel terroir.

Since 2021, Laure Canu has been at the helm of Château Cantemerle, leading a project that combines the renovation of guest facilities, the modernization of production facilities, and a biodiversity plan. The press release notes that the estate is certified as having “High Environmental Value”; the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux has also confirmed Laure Canu as the château’s general manager. In this context, this second wine takes on a significance that goes beyond that of a simple entry-level cuvée: it becomes the daily expression of a historic estate committed to a process of patient renewal. Not a revolution. A return to precision.

In a well-understood second wine, there is a kind of understated intelligence: the intelligence not to try to imitate the grand vin, but rather to offer a more immediate, more…

[30494,30493
79579,79577,77865,79576,79578
post-2066307","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-food-and-wine-en","category-wines-and-spirits","tag-bordeaux-second-wine","tag-cantemerle-castle","tag-grand-cru-classe-1855","tag-haut-medoc","tag-les-allees-de-cantemerle-2020
["GET
