At the H\u00f4tel Bachaumont, on April 9, 2026, Paul Honvo presents *1 Million Euros in Gold\u2026 or Silence*<\/em>, an installation that does not seek to display wealth, but rather to shift its center of gravity: from matter to belief, from the visible to the mental consensus that underpins all value. <\/p>\n\n

The installation consists of just a few elements. Ten miniature safes, all identical, are lined up facing the audience. One contains tens of thousands of euros\u2019 worth of gold, authenticated during the performance by numismatic expert David Knoblauch, in the presence of Ma\u00eetre Charles Poncet, a judicial officer. The other nine do not contain gold, but are weighted to have the same mass. Once locked, there is no way to distinguish the safe containing the gold from the empty ones. The gold exists, but is no longer visible. It becomes a possibility. <\/p>\n\n

It is therefore not gold that is the subject of the work, but the mental state it evokes. The piece is based on a simple, almost clinical mechanism: an object possesses real value, but that value becomes meaningless once it can no longer be located. Certainty, here, is not eliminated; it is suspended. Any of the chests could be the right one. Each one could also be nothing more than a closed volume, a colored surface, a container devoid of revelation. <\/p>\n\n

The title deliberately plays on this ambiguity. The exact amount of gold placed in the safe is not made public. Only the expert and the judicial officer know its precise value. This silence is not an omission, but a protocol: when the value contained in the safe reaches 100,000 euros, the ten safes will symbolically amount to one million euros\u2014or nothing at all, depending on where the viewer chooses to place their trust. <\/p>\n\n

The reference to Schr\u00f6dinger\u2019s cat paradox provides the intellectual framework for the installation. Formulated in 1935 by Erwin Schr\u00f6dinger, this thought experiment sought to explore the limits of quantum interpretation when the superposition of states is applied to the macroscopic world: as long as the box remains closed, the cat is considered to be in a state of theoretical indeterminacy. At Honvo, the cat disappears, replaced by gold. The box becomes a safe. Scientific uncertainty becomes aesthetic speculation. <\/p>\n\n

The piece is all the more interesting because it rejects the usual sensationalization of value. The chests measure 15 cm high, 15 cm deep, and 20 cm long, with a capacity of four liters. They rest on matte black MDF bases measuring 2.5 cm high, 35 cm long, and 30 cm wide. Including the base, each set weighs 4.2 kg. The slightly grainy steel surface retains something of the domestic, almost mundane, character of a household chest. The finish combines black, orange-yellow, yellow, green, light brown, light gray, and dark gray: a palette that is less decorative than it is camouflaging. <\/p>\n\n

The H\u00f4tel Bachaumont adds another layer of meaning. Located at 18 rue Bachaumont in the Montorgueil neighborhood, the hotel is part of that Parisian landscape where contemporary hospitality has been built on the transformation of historic venues. Its official website lists 49 rooms and decor designed by Doroth\u00e9e Meilichzon; Architectural Digest noted at the time of its reopening that the venue, which was active in the 1920s, had subsequently taken on a new life before being renovated. This context is not insignificant: displaying a work that explores the concept of value in a hotel amounts to situating it within a space itself founded on trust, reservations, unseen service, and the promised experience. <\/p>\n\n

The performance titled *Le Geste Scell\u00e9*<\/em> marks the transition from object to artwork. The gold is presented, authenticated, and placed in one of the safes, after which the ten volumes are locked. From that moment on, the installation can no longer return to its previous state. In the experience offered to the collector, the key becomes as much a moral choice as a functional accessory: asking for the key amounts to prioritizing the gold; refusing it amounts to preserving the artwork in a state of indeterminacy. <\/p>\n\n

The strength of the installation lies in its economy of means. No immersive effects, no showy technology, no overloaded narrative. Just a series of identical containers and the possibility that a precious metal might be hidden inside them. The work thus aligns with a tradition of conceptual art in which value lies not always in the material itself, but in the intellectual contract that binds the artist, the viewer, the institution, and the market. <\/p>\n\n

Paul Honvo\u2019s practice is characterized by pop culture, urban interventions, and recurring figures, including Moogy, a character drawn from the world of cartoons. The profile notes a recent shift toward more conceptual works, particularly following *Ascension*<\/em>, presented at the Pullman Hotel in Lyon. However, these biographical details would need to be further corroborated by independent external sources before they can be fully incorporated as critical reference points. <\/p>\n\n

What remains is this statement by the artist, which sums up the entire project better than anything else: \u201cThis private preview is not an exhaustive explanation, but an opening. Some answers may never emerge\u2026 And that is precisely where the work begins. \u201d In an art market often obsessed with traceability, market value, and proof, Paul Honvo introduces a more unsettling variable: doubt. Not as a weakness, but as raw material. <\/p>\n\n
