Below, eight hectares of limestone quarries.

The Château de La Rivière overlooks the Fronsadais landscape from its rocky promontory. Visitors usually remember the castle’s silhouette or the view of the river. Yet the most defining feature lies beneath their feet. The estate is home to a network of underground quarries that constitutes one of the most remarkable geological features of the Bordeaux wine region.

It is within this mineral-rich environment that the 2023 vintage of Blanc de Château de La Rivière should be appreciated.

The white wine vineyard is planted on clay-limestone soils, the traditional foundation of many great terroirs on the Right Bank. Here, the blend emphasizes varietal precision: two-thirds Sauvignon Blanc and one-third Sauvignon Gris. The vines, which are about fifteen years old and planted at a density of 6,600 vines per hectare, were harvested on August 31, 2023.

The winemaking process avoids unnecessary technical flourishes. Seventy percent of the wine ferments in tanks, while thirty percent is aged in barrels. The aging process follows the same proportional approach. Eight months are sufficient to impart structure without allowing the wood to take center stage.

This choice reflects a broader trend in contemporary white Bordeaux. While certain vintages have long sought their legitimacy in aromatic intensity or oak influence, a new generation of wines places greater emphasis on the balance between texture and freshness. The balance between tank and barrel aging precisely reflects this approach.

Detail

Clay-limestone soils.

Blend: two-thirds Sauvignon Blanc, one-third Sauvignon Gris.

Fermentation: 70% in tanks, 30% in barrels.

Rearing: eight months with the same distribution.

2023 Production: 18,800 bottles.

Alcohol content: 12.5%.

But the real question is one of location. The estate’s underground quarries naturally provide a stable, cool temperature for aging and storage. Before refrigeration units and modern climate-control systems, it was precisely this thermal stability that made cellars carved into the rock so valuable. Château de La Rivière thus carries on an age-old relationship between the wine and the subsoil that gave it life.

The 2023 white wine is thus more than just a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris. It emerges as the embodiment of an entire environment: a hillside overlooking the Dordogne, fifty hectares of vineyards planted on limestone, and a network of underground galleries where the rock quietly continues its work long after the harvest.

At a time when wine is often marketed through imagery, Château de La Rivière reminds us of a time-honored truth: certain terroirs express themselves just as much underground as they do on the surface.

Above, the Dordogne River.
