Founded in 1972 by several winemaking families, the estate now cultivates 120 hectares in the heart of the appellation, while championing an approach based on solidarity, plot-by-plot selection, and a deep understanding of the soils.

Jardin Zen 2024 is one of the most direct expressions of this approach.

This wine comes exclusively from the town of Beaumont-Monteux, on the ancient lower terraces of the Isère River. These pebbly soils, a legacy of the glacial periods that shaped the Rhône Valley, are one of the region’s defining geological features. Their high drainage capacity forces the vines to draw deeply for nutrients, while the stones accumulate and then release heat.

There is no blending here. The wine is made from 100 percent Syrah. This choice is consistent not only with the history of Crozes-Hermitage, but also with the desire to produce a wine that is straightforward, capable of conveying the identity of its origin without artifice.

The winemaking process follows the same principle of restraint. The grapes are destemmed before undergoing a long maceration accompanied by daily pumping over. Aging takes place exclusively in concrete and stainless steel tanks. No barrel aging is used to add an extra layer of aroma. This technical decision is significant: it prioritizes bringing out the fruit and the natural texture of the Syrah rather than the character of the wood.

Detail

Appellation: Crozes-Hermitage
Grape variety: 100% Syrah
Origin: Beaumont-Monteux
Soil: low-lying, ancient terraces with pebbles from the Isère River
Winemaking: destemming, long maceration, daily pumping over
Aging: concrete and stainless steel tanks
Alcohol: 12.5% vol.
Aging potential: six years

The flavor profile described by the winery centers on cherry, fresh strawberry, and a hint of dark chocolate. The tannins are described as refined, a sign of controlled extraction focused more on balance than on intensity. With 12.5% alcohol, this wine also reflects a pursuit of freshness that contrasts with some of the sunnier expressions from the southern Rhône Valley.

But the appeal of Jardin Zen goes beyond the contents of the bottle. This vintage reflects a deeper evolution in the Rhône wine region: a return to a geological understanding of wine. At Clairmont, the winemakers claim to have learned to taste the grapes “terroir by terroir,” making the soil a key tool in agronomic decision-making.

At a time when many wine regions are seeking to assert their identity in the face of increasingly uniform tastes, Jardin Zen reminds us that a wine can still be seen as the embodiment of a specific place. In this case, a few hectares of Syrah rooted in the ancient, stony terraces of the Isère.

As the major Rhône appellations gain in prominence, one question keeps coming up: How can we preserve a terroir’s uniqueness as production volumes increase and the industry expands?
