What this initiative reveals, between the lines, concerns the Maisons as much as it does indigenous communities.

According to the Beirut-based Institute of World Making, there are more than thirty dialects of Arabic. Levantine Arabic, Moroccan Darija, Mauritanian Hassaniya, and Upper Egyptian Saidi—each has its own syntactic structures, ellipses, polite expressions, and unspoken conventions. Most major language models commonly recognize only one of these: Modern Standard Arabic, the language of diplomats, newspapers, and textbooks. The other thirty, with their tens of millions of native speakers, their poetic corpora, and their knowledge passed down orally for centuries, appear in the training data as statistical noise—so underrepresented that they are, in effect, nonexistent.

It is on this specific observation—and not on some abstract activist ideal—that the Culture Preservation program is based. The program was announced in Paris at the 2025 AI Action Summit, and its first cohort was officially launched at VivaTech 2026 with a commitment of six and a half million euros from the French government. Four organizations are benefiting from this initiative: AIRA (African Internet Rights Alliance, Nairobi), the Institute of World Making (Beirut), Portal Sim Porteias (the Amazon region of Brazil), and Masakhane, Africa’s largest community dedicated to natural language processing, active across more than fifty languages on the continent. These organizations vary greatly in size—some are still in the process of being established—but all face the same fundamental problem: general-purpose AI erases what it does not understand, without indicating what it has decided to ignore.

Current AI, the organization leading this program, was founded in Paris during the AI Action Summit. Its operational model—Fund, Build, Bridge—is backed by $400 million in pledges, including $100 million from the French government, as well as contributions from the MacArthur Foundation, the McGovern Foundation, and several private companies with aligned missions. Its ambition goes beyond that of a think tank or advocacy group: Current AI aims to build the entire technology stack, from the hardware layer all the way to the application, without relying on any single private company. It is a public alternative to commercial AI, with an architecture designed to ensure sovereignty.

— Details —

Masakhane supports more than fifty African languages and is, to date, the largest NLP community on the continent. The Institute of World Making documents more than thirty distinct Arabic dialects, the majority of which are absent from standard corpora. For the Amazonian communities supported by Portal Sim Porteias, the challenge is of yet another nature: several of these languages lack a standardized writing system. What these four organizations are developing—consent-based data collection methodologies, culturally situated annotation tools, and models trained on community data—is an infrastructure that did not exist before them. The cost of building it is incomparable to what large corporations invest each week in computing power.

This program is not limited to the dialects of the Sahel or the ecological knowledge of Indigenous Peoples. It gives voice to something that luxury fashion houses have left unsaid for several years.

A House’s intangible heritage—its technical terms, its proprietary vocabulary, the micro-decisions that make up the craft of a Master Saddler or a Master Watchmaker, the collection archives, the way an artistic director articulates his vision in a design office meeting—is exposed to the same risk of being erased. Not erased through destruction, but erased through dilution. Large generative models are trained on the entire web and on public corpora. What is not included there, or what is underrepresented, is absorbed, averaged out, and rendered indistinguishable. The term “crantage” has no Wikipedia entry. The gestures of a saddle maker being shown a handle design cannot be transcribed into a standard prompt. The presentation conventions for a collection shown to a buyer on the Place Vendôme do not appear in any accessible dataset.

It’s not a matter of translation. It’s a matter of memory architecture.

This issue has become a strategic one for any executive committee overseeing a heritage brand: dependence on a third-party platform is not just a matter of technical performance or operational convenience. It is a matter of control over what makes the brand unique. In 2026, a unilateral decision by an American operator could cut off access to a service around which an entire team has restructured its workflows. This scenario is no longer theoretical: companies that have integrated third-party models into critical infrastructure have learned this the hard way, without warning. For an intangible asset, dependence on a single supplier is a form of deferred expropriation.

What Current AI offers—controlled models, data sovereignty, and infrastructure without a single shareholder—is precisely what the Houses would need if they decided to treat their own data as a strategic asset, rather than as a resource that is automatically entrusted to a generic LLM.

The question is not whether these models will be powerful enough to understand luxury. They are already powerful enough to mimic its surface. The question is who controls the data they’re trained on—and therefore who controls the representation these models construct of a House, its history, its actions, and its values. What the French government has just funded for communities of a few hundred people in the Amazon—the ability to exist within AI with their own voice, their own memory, and their own categories of the world—is the same structural problem faced by a fashion house when it delegates to a generic model the task of compiling its archives, analyzing its press coverage, or preparing its collection presentations. The difference in scale does not change the nature of the problem. It will, however, alter its consequences.

The Culture Preservation program was given this name deliberately. “Preservation” implies that it is already too late to wait.

The fashion houses that talk the most about tradition and heritage are perhaps the ones that have done the least to put their own ideas into practice. Ten years from now, when a heritage director searches his House’s archives for the definition of a technical technique, a ratio of proportions, or a choice of material that exists nowhere else—he will turn to a tool. The question raised this morning in Paris is not yet the one the Houses are asking. But there is rarely a good time to ask it once it’s too late.

In June 2026, Paris launched the world’s first grant program dedicated to cultural preservation in the context of AI—six and a half million euros for four organizations working in Africa,…

[77972
78262,78261,78264,78263,78260
post-2063225","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-luxury-and-ai","tag-current-ai-paris","tag-intangible-cultural-heritage-ia","tag-linguistic-diversity-ai","tag-luxury-expertise-artificial-intelligence","tag-sovereignty-ai-luxury
["GET
