With Eclettica<\/em>, Maison Bvlgari takes perfumery into a rarer realm: that of the hybrid object, at once a container, a piece of jewelry, and a chromatic statement. The collection brings together three creations\u2014 Eclettica Scultura<\/em>, Eclettica Architettura<\/em>, and Eclettica Pittura<\/em> \u2014all sharing the same olfactory signature composed by Yann Vasnier, housed in Murano glass bottles adorned with gold and gemstones. <\/p>\n\n

The concept is not simply about creating a fragrance. It involves giving scent a physical form that draws on three disciplines: sculpture, architecture, and painting. At Bvlgari, this interplay is no accident. Founded in Rome in 1884 by Sotirio Bulgari, the House has built part of its aesthetic language around color, volume, and unapologetic Roman references. Here, fine perfumery becomes an extension of this jewelry-making language: not an isolated fragrance, but a system of assembly where gemstones, glass, metal, and the scent composition work together. <\/p>\n\n

Perhaps the most interesting aspect lies in the bottle itself. Each piece is mouth-blown by Murano artisans using a technique described in the dossier as \u201cSbruffo<\/em> \u201d: the molten glass is rolled in colored pigments and then coated with a transparent layer to create chromatic depth. This process draws on the long history of Venetian glassmaking, where color is not applied to the surface but is built into the very thickness of the material. Murano\u2019s techniques are based precisely on this mastery of hot glass, the art of blowing, and the layering of colored layers. <\/p>\n\n

Once crafted, the bottle leaves the glass workshop and is sent to Bvlgari\u2019s Haute Joaillerie workshops in Rome. The detachable accessory that accompanies it can be worn as a brooch or a pendant. The fragrance is no longer merely contained within a precious vessel: it interacts with a standalone piece of jewelry\u2014detachable, wearable, and therefore alive. Eclettica Scultura<\/em> draws inspiration from Roman bas-reliefs. Its centerpiece is an ancient coin bearing the effigy of Emperor Alexander Severus, who reigned from 222 to 235 A.D. The piece does not imitate antiquity; rather, it extracts a fragment from it and reimagines it within a contemporary context.<\/p>\n\n

Eclettica Architettura<\/em> focuses on proportion. This convertible yellow gold piece features a pink spinel, surrounded by diamonds and emerald chips. The cap, set with a central amethyst pearl and mother-of-pearl inlays, echoes the piece\u2019s radial design. The reference to Italian Renaissance architecture is expressed less through a specific motif than through its structure: center, radiance, balance, and repetition. <\/p>\n\n

Eclettica Pittura<\/em> chooses blue. A tanzanite forms the centerpiece of the jewel, surrounded by diamonds and turquoise inlays. The clasp combines chalcedony and lapis lazuli. The design evokes the blue of Pompeii, a pigment associated with ancient frescoes and a sense of visual sacredness. Once again, Bvlgari does not use history merely as decoration. The House employs it as a reservoir of symbols: color, material, light, and symbolic power. <\/p>\n\n

The three creations share a unique fragrance. Yann Vasnier has composed a floral-amber structure centered on Italian blood orange, vanilla absolute, and an amber accord of chestnut cream. In a quote from the press kit, the perfumer sums up his intention: \u201cA fragrance that transforms diversity into a harmonious olfactory signature, as complex, refined, and unique as art itself.\u201d The phrasing remains poetic, but it accurately captures the essence of the project: Eclettica<\/em> seeks not so much an isolated olfactory novelty as the blending of differences. <\/p>\n\n

The \u201clifetime refill\u201d option, mentioned for each fragrance, adds a more contemporary dimension. In the world of jewelry-inspired perfumes, where the object could easily become nothing more than a decorative piece, this feature ensures it remains functional. The bottle is not conceived as a sealed relic, but as a container meant to last, to be reused, refilled, and passed on. <\/p>\n\n

What Bvlgari showcases with Eclettica<\/em>, at its core, is a very Roman concept of luxury: controlled accumulation. Murano glass, antique pieces, spinel, tanzanite, coral, lapis lazuli, yellow gold, and a floral amber fragrance. It could all become too opulent, too ostentatious. The balance lies in transforming this richness into a language. The collection reminds us that fine perfumery, when it allows itself to move beyond the realm of scent alone, can become an art of form.
