The reported increase is 870% year-on-year. The figure is that of a commercial platform, not an independent observatory, but the direction it points is real: after years of reflective glass skin and minimalist clean girl, the market is moving towards something less defined.

This “something” deserves a closer look, precisely because it’s difficult to name. A diffused, airy finish that “enhances without appearing forced” – the wording is that of the press release, but it describes an ancient phenomenon: make-up designed not to look like make-up. Rice powder has been around since the 17th century for exactly this reason. So has the watercolour foundation of the 1990s. What changes is the context in which this desire for transparency is expressed.

When skin becomes an image surface

The reason given by market players to explain the rise of cloud skin is photogenics. The diffused finish “looks good on all smartphones”, notes Danielle Louise de Fresha, “it softens the appearance without giving a flat or busy effect”. The argument says more than it seems to: the face is now designed for a camera before it is designed for a direct gaze. The surface of the skin is calibrated for JPEG compression, for the frontal light of a telephone, for the rendering of a videoconferencing filter.

What “cloud skin” technically describes

A semi-matte, light-diffusing finish – neither reflective (glass skin) nor absorbent (matte). The effect is achieved by layering light textures: blurring base over moisturizer, skin tint or fluid foundation, cream textures for color (blush, bronzer), blurring powder localized on the T-zone. The key is to avoid total coverage: skin texture remains visible under make-up.

What cloud skin sells – and this is where the angle becomes cultural – is invisible effort. The skin isn’t naked: it’s prepared, smoothed and diffused. But the work must not be seen. This paradox is nothing new in the history of make-up, but it takes on a particular dimension at a time when consumers are simultaneously declaring their desire to “be authentic” and investing massively in products designed to produce this authenticity.

Brands don’t have to develop new categories to cater to cloud skin: the products already exist. What’s new is the name given to their combination, and the narrative that surrounds that name. The trend is less a technical gesture than a semantic act – a way of renaming an existing practice to make it desirable in a given context.

The question that remains open is how long a “natural” finish can remain aspirational before it too becomes the norm against which the next trend will be built.

Fresha is the world’s leading beauty and wellness booking platform

The cloud skin – a semi-matte, slightly diffused finish, neither glossy nor powdery – generated 724,000 searches in one month, according to data aggregated by Fresha.
