Night is often the moment when watchmaking reveals what it really thinks of use. A watch can then become decorative and illegible, or on the contrary, rediscover its original purpose: to tell the time without negotiation. With the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume, IWC Schaffhausen pushes this idea to a rare threshold. Here, light is not deposited on the object. It enters the material. <\/p>\n\n

Presented at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, this limited edition of 250 introduces Ceralume technology to the Pilot’s Watches collection. The 46.5 mm case is made of luminescent white ceramic, while the white dial and white rubber strap are enriched with Super-LumiNova\u00ae pigments. The whole is designed to emit a bluish glow for over 24 hours after exposure to a light source. IWC thus describes a watch with two presences: white, almost clinical, by day; blue and spectral, by night. <\/p>\n\n

This is no mere chromatic exercise. Ceramics have held a special place in the history of IWC for almost four decades. The Manufacture recalls having worked with this material as early as 1986, notably with the black zirconium oxide ceramic of the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar reference 3755, then presented as a major technical advance in the watch case. The Ceralume extends this trajectory: it retains the imaginary qualities of ceramics – hardness, scratch resistance, technical whiteness – while adding an optical property usually reserved for indexes, hands or dial inserts. <\/p>\n\n

The difficulty lies in manufacturing. Conventional white ceramics are based on a mixture of zirconium oxide and metal oxides. To obtain a luminous ceramic, IWC combines ceramic powders with Super-LumiNova\u00ae pigments. These materials have different particle sizes, requiring strict homogeneity before firing. XPL engineers therefore developed a ball milling process: powders and pigments are placed in a rotating cylindrical drum partially filled with balls, whose movement fragments and refines the mixture through impact and attrition. Here, light becomes a particle engineering problem. <\/p>\n\n

Another important element is the presence of RC Tritec, a Swiss specialist in Super-LumiNova\u00ae pigments. IWC points out that the technology was developed by its XPL division with the support of this company, whose pigments function like a luminous storage battery: they absorb the energy of natural or artificial light and then restore it in visible form, in a cycle that can be repeated. In 2024, the company had already presented its first fully luminescent concept watch, applying this technology to a Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41. The 2026 version marks the transition from a concept to a marketed timepiece featuring a major complication. <\/p>\n\n

This complication is the perpetual calendar. At IWC, it carries a precise historical weight: developed by Kurt Klaus in the 1980s, it mechanically recognizes the variable length of the months and automatically adds February 29 in leap years. The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume displays the date, day, month and moon phase on four sub-dials; the four-digit year is shown between 7 and 8 o’clock. The Double Moon phase shows the moon as it appears in the northern and southern hemispheres, with a deviation of one day every 577.5 years. <\/p>\n\n

The Manufacture Calibre 52616 powers the whole. It operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, has 54 jewels and offers a seven-day power reserve thanks to a Pellaton automatic winding system reinforced by ceramic components. The sapphire caseback reveals a movement decorated with circular graining and blued screws. Even the “Probus Scafusia” medallion integrated into the rotor is made of Super-LumiNova\u00ae and becomes visible in the dark. This detail might seem anecdotal, but it’s actually quite coherent. Light doesn’t just adorn the public face of the watch. It reaches the underside, the space of the movement, the less visible but more telling place. <\/p>\n\n

The aesthetic tension of this piece is noteworthy. The 46.5 mm diameter and 15.9 mm thickness fully belong to the Big Pilot universe. This is not a discreet watch, nor an attempt at elegant miniaturization. It assumes its instrumental presence, large screw-down crown, immediate legibility, convex sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, and ten-bar water-resistance. But its monochrome white treatment shifts this mass into an almost experimental form. By day, the watch evokes the prototype, the test object, the instrument out of the laboratory. By night, it becomes an active surface. <\/p>\n\n

Perhaps this is where the piece escapes mere effect. Contemporary watchmaking loves proprietary materials because they make a difference. The risk is well known: turning every advance into a spectacular argument. IWC partially avoids this pitfall by associating the Ceralume with a perpetual calendar, i.e. a complication of long time. The object glows after a few minutes’ exposure to light, but its calendar thinks in years, lunar cycles and mechanical centuries. Instant and duration cohabit in the same case. <\/p>\n\n

The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume is not just a luminous watch. It’s a proposition about the visibility of time. It says that a technical piece can retain an element of theater, provided that this theater is produced by the material itself. By day, it fades into whites and grays. At night, she no longer tries to make herself small. It simply reminds us that the instrument sometimes needs darkness to become legible. <\/p>\n\n
