A diver’s watch whose legibility depends as much on the chemistry of the materials as on the light they let through. Swatch’s SCUBAQUA collection evolves here with precise touches: new colors, integration of a payment system, and above all an assumed hybridization between opaque bioceramics and translucent biosourced polymers. <\/p>\n\n

The object is based on an apparently simple construction: a 44 mm case combining matt white bioceramics and transparent elements made from biosourced materials derived from castor oil. This contrast is not decorative. It structures the reading of the watch. The opaque parts stabilize the perception of the dial; the translucent sections diffuse the light and modify the visual depth according to the angle. The result is less a surface effect than a suspended volume, akin to the marine organisms that inspire the collection. <\/p>\n\n

This reference to the living is not new to Swatch, but here it takes on a technical form. The bezels, dials and bracelets use translucent polymers whose coloring is integrated into the material. Indexes and numerals are printed in white, with luminescent treatment for night-time reading. The whole is based on a classic functional principle in diving watchmaking: high contrast, wide markings and immediate legibility, enhanced here by the luminous diffusion of the materials. <\/p>\n\n

Another structural element is the crown, positioned at ten o’clock. This choice, historically used on certain diving watches to avoid accidental pressure on the wrist, also alters the visual balance. It off-centers the object, introducing an asymmetry that breaks with the segment’s more conventional codes. <\/p>\n\n

The ten-bar resistance makes the watch suitable for accessible aquatic activities – swimming, snorkeling – without claiming to be a technical diving watch. This positioning is in line with the heritage of the Swatch SCUBA watches, introduced in the 1990s, which helped democratize the aesthetics of diving watches into everyday wear. <\/p>\n\n

Four variations structure this extension: light green, dark blue, orange and pink. Each variation retains the same architecture but modifies the overall perception through the tint of the transparent components. The light green model, for example, combines tone-on-tone hands with blue seconds, creating a differentiated reading of the movement. Dark blue favors a more sober contrast, while orange and pink accentuate visual saturation, transforming the watch into a luminous surface. <\/p>\n\n

Two versions integrate the Swatch Pay function, enabling contactless payment via a chip integrated into the case. The addition remains invisible in use: no external element signals the function. This choice is in keeping with a logic of discreet integration, where the technology does not alter the form but extends its use. <\/p>\n\n

Since 1983, Swatch has built its legitimacy on plastic as a watchmaking material – not as a substitute, but as a language. SCUBAQUA extends this trajectory by introducing a bio-sourced dimension and a reflection on transparency. Here, the material is not only used to manufacture the object: it becomes the very subject of the watch. <\/p>\n\n

This is not craftsmanship in the traditional sense. Rather, it is the result of precise industrial engineering, where polymer formulation, injection and coloring determine the identity of the piece. Another form of know-how, less visible, but just as decisive in the way an object looks. <\/p>\n\n
