At last! Earlier this year, Swiss watchmaker OMEGA announced the long-awaited return of its iconic calibre 321. Today, on the occasion of the 50th <\/span>
\n e<\/sup>
\n<\/span> anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, the company is pleased to unveil the first modern Speedmaster Moonwatch powered by this historic movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Famous for its sophisticated aesthetic design, the original calibre 321 was the first movement to power the OMEGA Speedmaster watch in 1957. It powered a whole series of space-travelling models, including the Speedmaster ST 105.003 (the model tested and approved by NASA and worn by astronaut Ed White on the first American spacewalk) and the Speedmaster ST 105.012 (the first watch worn on the Moon on July 21, 1969). After lengthy research and reconstruction in a dedicated workshop, the caliber 321 is now reborn with all its original specifications. <\/span><\/p>\n

The recomposed movement can be admired through the sapphire crystal caseback of the new Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 Platinum. As its name suggests, this chronograph features a satin-polished 42 mm case fashioned from a special platinum-gold alloy (Pt950Au20). It is inspired by the asymmetrical case of the Speedmaster 4 <\/span>e<\/sup><\/span> generation Speedmaster with its typical curved lugs (ST 105.012) and rests on a black leather strap fastened with a platinum buckle. This fascinating new watch also features a black ceramic bezel embossed with the Speedmaster family’s emblematic tachometric scale in white enamel. <\/span><\/p>\n

Elsewhere on the watch, there’s no shortage of captivating details. Explore the onyx step dial, whose deep black color contrasts beautifully with other materials, such as the 18K white gold of the hour markers and hands (with the exception of the central chronograph seconds hand). Another notable feature is the three meteorite counters. To emphasize the Speedmaster’s link with our satellite, OMEGA has used real lunar meteorite inserts as a tribute to the calibre 321, which has powered all Speedmasters worn on the Moon. <\/span><\/p>\n
