Playing on subtle variations of blue, this new Louis Vuitton creation integrates a flying tourbillon placed in the center of the dial, completing its rotation in one minute. A real technical and aesthetic challenge, the association of the central flying tourbillon with the Spin Time display is a first in watchmaking history. With its unique conception and design, the tourbillon cage literally seems to float in the center of the watch. Emblematic of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton’s watchmaking expertise, this Haute Horlogerie timepiece also features a tourbillon cage in the shape of a V. The watchmakers at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton drew their inspiration from the House’s archives, incorporating as a coat of arms the V motif invented by Gaston Vuitton in 1901 to adorn the famous Steamer Bag. With each passing hour, one of the twelve blue cubes tilts on its axis as if by magic. The dial of the Escale Spin Time Tourbillon Central bleue thus changes its appearance thanks to the twenty-four square, geometric flags hand-painted on each of the twelve cubes. Extremely complex to achieve on such small surfaces, this process of transferring the paint – contained in the hollow of a clich\u00e9 – by means of a siliconized rubber stamp is carried out by hand, color after color, guaranteeing precise marking. With a diameter of 41 mm and a thickness of 12.8 mm, the Escale Spin Time case is made of satin-finished titanium with 950 platinum bezel, lugs and crown. Positioned at the center of the sapphire crystal, a soberly striped disc – bearing the inscription Louis Vuitton Spin Time – evokes the shape of a stylized globe and perpetuates Louis Vuitton’s globe-trotting tradition. 1 A playful and innovative way to tell the time In 2010, Louis Vuitton introduces the Tambour Spin Time GMT and proposes a new, innovative and playful way to tell the time, thanks to an ingenious system of twelve cubes rotated by a Manufacture movement (LV119) revolutionizing the principle of jumping hours. In 2014, the Maison went one step further with the launch of another completely new timepiece: a singular timepiece in its form – a new case named Escale inspired by the Maison’s trunks, captivating in its functions, an unprecedented interpretation of the Worldtime function, and with a colored dial inspired by the trunks’ personalization by hand-painted bands of color, initials and coats of arms. Escale Worldtime continues its horological journey with a luminous navy blue dial. Unveiled in 2014, the Escale Worldtime watch perpetuates the great tradition of travel so dear to Louis Vuitton; its famous trunks and multiple variations being – even today – the indispensable accessory for those who love to travel around the world with elegance and refinement. The unique Escale Worldtime Bleue draws on the history of Vuitton and its legendary trunks to reinvent the codes of the great traveler’s watch. At a time when borders are blurring, Louis Vuitton offers an original interpretation of the “Worldtime” function for the wrists of globetrotters and businessmen who love fine watchmaking. 1 A blue dial in the colors of the world Louis Vuitton has always offered customers the opportunity to personalize their trunks with hand-painted bands of color, initials, coats of arms and other geometric pictograms. This colorful universe and vibrant personalization served as the original inspiration for the Escale Worldtime watch’s pearl-gray dial. This year, the dial’s color evolves into a luminous blue, giving it a highly contemporary personality. Using the miniature painting technique and oil paint, it takes the craftsman 40 hours to create a dial in the specially dedicated workshop at the Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. A total of 38 colors are applied, one by one, with a brush and in small successive touches, before drying in an oven heated to 100\u00b0C. The result, captivating in its brilliance, relief and contrasts, is further enhanced by the visual effect that separates the crystal from the dial. This is why the black triangle topped by a yellow arrow – the only fixed element on this dial, allowing the time and reference city to be read – is placed directly under the crystal so as not to impede the movement of the mobile discs. A contemporary case with a heritage design Unique, the 41 mm-diameter case in brushed titanium and polished white gold (lugs, bezel, crown) gives the impression of having always existed. Like a mini-malle containing a precious caliber, this singular case takes the corners of Louis Vuitton trunks and transforms them into precious horns that protect the case. A large dial aperture – predominantly blue – is added to the slim white-gold bezel to ensure perfect legibility of the “Worldtime” function. On the back of the instrument, the sapphire crystal caseback reveals an aluminum disc coupled to an oscillating weight revolving around a large frosted glass LV. A “worldtime” function magnified by blue With the Escale Worldtime Bleue watch, a glance under the initials of a city reveals the time in the time zone it represents; the minutes are read off naturally under the yellow arrow pointing to the time in the reference city. Three separate moving discs make up the dial. Adjusted by a single crown, they are synchronized by an automatic caliber developed and assembled by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton: – The large, coloured, two-stage outer disc bears the initials of the cities. It rotates on demand to set the reference city, positioned at noon above the yellow arrow. – The middle disk, in permanent rotation, is divided into two half-circles, white and navy blue, to distinguish between daytime and night-time hours. – In the center, the smaller circle is also in permanent rotation, and bears the minute numerals underlined by a precise, contrasting minute track. 2 The handless “Universal Hours” indication is an original horological interpretation developed by the master watchmakers of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. It is also, in a way, the quintessence of a complication that lets you know what time it is – instantly – in the 24 time zones defined by Sir Stanford Fleming and ratified by the International Meridian Conference held in Washington in October 1884, establishing Greenwich as the “zero” meridian.
