Terminology is not regulated<\/h2>\n\n

Contrary to popular belief, Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum and Extrait de Parfum are not subject to binding international regulations. There is no ISO standard imposing a minimum level of aromatic concentrate for each of these designations. What does exist is a professional usage consolidated by the perfume industry, codified by bodies such as the IFRA (International Fragrance Association) and applied, with variations, by the major Houses. <\/p>\n\n

Professional use distinguishes four levels: Eau de Cologne (2 to 5% concentrate), Eau de Toilette (5 to 15%), Eau de Parfum (15 to 20%) and Extrait ou Parfum (20 to 40%). These ranges are wide because concentration is not the only factor that determines staying power. The nature of the raw materials – their volatility, their fixation coefficient – plays at least as decisive a role. <\/p>\n\n

What concentration really changes<\/h2>\n\n

An Eau de Toilette and an Eau de Parfum bearing the same name are not always the same formula diluted to different strengths. Perfumers often adjust the composition according to concentration: at higher levels, certain musky or woody molecules take on a presence they don’t have in the diluted version. The result can be a significantly different character, not just increased persistence. <\/p>\n\n

Chanel No 5 illustrates this principle: the Eau de Toilette, created in 1924 after the Extrait version of 1921, is not a dilution. The proportions of aldehydes and rose have been recalibrated to make it suitable for everyday wear. Extrait and Eau de Toilette are technically two distinct fragrances, sharing a common olfactory identity. <\/p>\n\n

The Extrait de Parfum category has been enjoying renewed interest since 2020, driven by niche perfumery and demand for sillage fragrances. Houses such as Maison Francis Kurkdjian and Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Malle have built part of their positioning on high concentrations coupled with exceptional raw materials – oud from Laos, iris from Florence, rose centifolia from Grasse. <\/p>\n\n

Extract is not always superior<\/h2>\n\n

Concentration is a tool, not a hierarchy. A lemony Eau de Cologne, designed for morning freshness and assumed volatility, would lose its meaning in Extrait. The original 4711, Eau de Cologne de Cologne created in 1792, is superior to any attempt to enrich its formula because its lightness is its proposition. Similarly, certain marine or aquatic fragrances developed in the 1990s have no life in high concentration – their synthetic raw materials (Calone, Aquaxyl) don’t offer the depth that the long time of Extrait requires. <\/p>\n\n

Detail – Background score as a criterion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

A fragrance’s staying power depends less on its concentration than on the nature of its base notes. An Extract rich in citrus – highly volatile – will last less than an Oriental Eau de Toilette loaded with oud, amber or musk. Gas chromatographs measure that a top note (bergamot, lemon) evaporates in 15 to 30 minutes, a middle note (rose, jasmine) in 2 to 4 hours, and a base note (sandalwood, vetiver, musk) in 4 to 12 hours, depending on the formulation. <\/em><\/p>\n\n

The next time a saleswoman recommends an Eau de Parfum over an Eau de Toilette for its “better staying power”, the right question is: better staying power for what?
