Paris, April 7, 2022 – Tales of The Macallan Volume I, The Laird of Easter Elchies (1659 – 1715) is a
tribute to Captain John Grant, who first saw the riches of the Easter Elchies estate, the land
that has been home to The Macallan distillery since 1824. This story reflects the heritage, expertise and uncompromising pursuit of excellence
that has driven The Macallan for almost 200 years.
Born in 1659 on the banks of the River Spey, John Grant joined the Scottish military forces at a very young age
. On his return from the war, he transformed the vast wilderness his family had owned
since 1543, and inherited, into the “garden of Elchies”, the birthplace of The Macallan.
A born farmer, he worked the land until it provided the perfect conditions for growing barley. His efforts
helped sustain a small farming community that used its crops to distill whisky. In
1700, he enlarged and renovated the house at Easter Elchies, which stands on a hill overlooking the River Spey.
Today, this exceptional building is considered the spiritual home of The Macallan. His values
and his deep respect for nature, as well as the spirit of sharing he demonstrated, live on and are
perpetuated today through the history of The Macallan.

Tales of The Macallan Volume I is a single malt whisky of excellence, specially crafted in a limited edition
to honor the legacy of John Grant. Distilled in 1950 and bottled in 2021, it is a
spirit of unique exception, where the rarity of its taste gives it an exceptional character. Like The Macallan
Estate and Easter Elchies House, this precious whisky echoes a very old tale. Spices and smoke from sweet
woods and old oak pair perfectly with the delicate symphony of ripe fruit and spice.
Bottled in a hand-crafted, bespoke crystal decanter, this iconic single malt is concealed
in an extraordinary almanac book. The Macallan has collaborated with renowned illustrator Andrew Davidson
to create a collection telling the story of Captain John Grant. Known for his traditional
printing techniques using woodcuts, Andrew Davidson’s work includes postage stamps for
the Royal Mail, designs for the glass doors of Wimbledon’s center court, and covers for
Harry Potter books.
To create the unique bottle for Tales of The Macallan Volume I, the Scotch whisky brand also
teamed up with French master crystal maker Lalique. The crystal decanter is engraved with one of Andrew Davidson’s
famous illustrations. Featuring a bespoke transit stopper, this limited edition was
made by artisan J.C. Ribiero. United by a shared sense of heritage, craftsmanship and creativity,
Lalique and The Macallan first met in 2005 and have since collaborated on a
range of decanters and exceptional products. Tales of The Macallan marks the next chapter in this
partnership, and testifies to the shared quest for excellence that drives the two houses.
The Macallan has also teamed up with Imprimerie du Marais, which creates luxury pieces using
paper, ink and printing processes of the highest quality. Each page of the book has been printed
meticulously. Handcrafted using luxurious leather and 24-carat gold leaf, this remarkable book
required unrivalled technical expertise to conceal the decanter in over 800 pages. Traditional London luxury bookbinders
, Shepherds, Sangorski & Sutcliffe and Zaehnsdorf created the unique book
Tales of The Macallan Volume I.

To mark the launch of Tales of The Macallan Volume I, a short film has been created to bring to life
the story of John Grant, featuring a selection of illustrations, under the musical notes of a piece
composed by Nicola Benedetti, the renowned Scottish violinist.
Limited to 350 decanters worldwide, Tales of The Macallan Volume I is available at The Macallan estate,

Alcohol level: 44.6%
Nose: grapefruit zest, old oak, vanilla, melon, wood smoke, nutmeg, ripe plum and
almond.
Palate: peach and apple, wood spices with ginger and clove notes, sweet wood smoke
and Yuzu.
