At the age of 44, Xavier Jolivet faces a major challenge: to raise the Royal Palm Marrakech<\/a> to the same level as its Mauritian reference. In other words, to the top! Opened at the beginning of 2014, this new luxury hotel is not lacking in assets to achieve this. The hotel’s general manager agreed to answer our questions. <\/h4>\n

What’s your background? How did you come to manage the Royal Palm Marrakech?<\/h5>\n

My background as a hotelier is fairly classic. I went to hotel school and gradually worked my way up. I started my career with the Forest Hill chain, then moved on to the Crillon. I then worked in the United States, where I met Alain Ducasse, who took me on as part of his team. I was then in charge of catering at Le Martinez, before moving on to Le M\u00e9tropole in Monaco. I spent 3 years as assistant manager at the Royal Palm in Mauritius, and then the Group offered me the challenge of managing this new hotel. <\/p>\n

Why did the Beachcomber group decide to set up in Marrakech?<\/h5>\n

Beachcomber wanted to get closer to its outbound markets, i.e. Europe. The group wanted to “get off the islands” and take on a more international dimension. At the time, the Kingdom of Morocco offered some facilities for setting up in the Marrakech area.
\nThe idea was to open a Royal Palm similar to the one in Mauritius, with a comparable quality of service. In fact, a parallel can be drawn between the Mauritian and Moroccan staff. They are people with a real sense of welcome and generosity. <\/p>\n

The hotel has been open since the beginning of 2014, how would you sum up these first months of opening?<\/h5>\n

A very positive assessment! Customer feedback is good. Comments on travel sites such as Tripadvisor are rather complimentary. Our customers have a different experience to that offered by other hotels in Morocco. By this I mean a world that’s luxurious but not overly ostentatious. A seaside hotel spirit, even if there’s no sea, a place that’s very open to the outside world and focused on leisure. Guests love the Kids Club. The sports center offers a multitude of activities. The Table is of the highest quality. The golf course and vegetation are major assets.
\nOn a human level, it’s been a stressful time, but it’s enabled me to get to know the teams. Fill rates are quite satisfactory, even if there’s still room for improvement. I’m not made of certainties. Every day is a challenge! <\/p>\n

The Royal Palm is a legendary establishment in the hotel world. Is it an added pressure to run this hotel?<\/h5>\n

It’s a lot of pressure and an extra burden to run a hotel with such a name. It’s a legendary hotel with legendary customers. Today, this hotel is different, but has the same DNA. The Royal Palm Marrakech has more rooms: 135 suites and villas. It’s almost twice the size of the Royal Palm Maurice.
\nThe product is different, but the spirit of elegance and luxury is the same. The codes are identical, but the country is different and so is the average length of stay. Here, we’re more of a city hotel. Depending on the season, customers are more or less inclined to leave the hotel. <\/p>\n

What’s your typical day like?<\/h5>\n

I arrive at 7:30 in the morning and read the previous day’s activity and my e-mails. At 8:30 a.m., I hold an operations meeting with my teams to review the previous day’s activity and the particularities of each guest. After the meeting, I tour the hotel, meeting guests to make sure their stay is going well and to meet their expectations. In the afternoon, I work on development with the teams in the various departments. In the evening, if I don’t have dinner at the hotel, I make a final visit to the bar to see the guests I haven’t met during the day, before going home to my family. <\/p>\n

What do you like customers to say when they leave?<\/h5>\n

That he’ll be back! If he wants to come back, it’s because we’ve lived up to his expectations. <\/p>\n

What are the customer characteristics?<\/h5>\n

The most numerous clientele is French. Historically, the French love Morocco and Marrakech in particular. There’s a glamorous side to the city. There are few destinations 3 hours from Europe that offer such a change of scenery. We also have British, Italian and German customers. We’re looking to develop the American market, which is a new clientele for the Beachcomber Hotels Group, owner of the Royal Palm. <\/p>\n

What places do you recommend in Marrakech?<\/h5>\n

I recommend my colleagues, with whom I get on very well indeed.
\nI like to go for a drink at La Mamounia. It’s a beautiful bar with a lovely atmosphere. It’s a “belle maison” that celebrated its 90th anniversary.
\nI love going to Marrakech’s little bistros: the Studio, the Loft, Mamma Mia… They’re very Parisian places. I also love Al Fassia, where you can eat the best shoulder of lamb in Marrakech! <\/p>\n

Tell us about the recently opened Spa.<\/h5>\n

We have created a Spa with Clarins, a long-standing partner of the Beachcomber group. It’s the first time in the world that this brand has set up a boutique in a Spa. We also have a Barber Shop. It’s a boutique dedicated to men. We offer the chance to experience a traditional shave with a cabbage cutter.
\nWe offer a very wide range of services, including a hairdressing salon, steam rooms, massage rooms, pedicure salon, hydrojet room, Nail Bar… A consultation area with therapists will enable customers to benefit from personalized treatments. <\/p>\n

What are the characteristics of Golf?<\/h5>\n

It’s an 18-hole course. It’s a course that can be complicated and simple.
\nThis golf course wasn’t meant to be frustrating. In golf, you play against yourself. We made sure that this golf course was suitable for all levels.
\nThis golf course is also hilly. It’s watered with recycled water. There’s an eco-conscious dimension. We planted a lot of trees. It’s really pleasant! <\/p>\n

Is there room for all the luxury hotels in Marrakech?<\/h5>\n

You have to try to be the best you can be. You can always find excuses. When you open a hotel, you have to be the best and offer a high quality of service. You have to offer as much as possible (spa, leisure center, Kids Club). There is competition, but hoteliers have to “sell” the destination. Marrakech also needs to create events to attract even more tourists. <\/p>\n

I want our employees to be happy. A hotel is above all a human adventure. I’d like to thank our investors, our customers and above all our staff. A fine hotel is nothing without staff who love the place in which they work. In Morocco, the notion of family is paramount! <\/p>\n
