It’s tempting to give it up. That would be unacceptable. It would mean abandoning a democratic promise: are we proposing to re-establish censal suffrage when we don’t like the results of elections? This book lays the groundwork for the necessary reconciliation of a demanding and elegant transmission of culture, with a concern for efficiency and attention to students as they are. Mara Goyet proposes a new age of teaching and paints a portrait of the teacher of tomorrow, halfway between Roland Barthes and Lara Croft.

Mara Goyet is a history and geography teacher in a Parisian secondary school. The “middle classes”, inherited from the Trente glorieuses, have disappeared to make way for the new working classes, excluded from the benefits of globalization. The bipolarization of French political life is living its last moments: both left and right must urgently reprogram their software.

The longer the economic and social crisis lasts, the higher the profile of Christophe Guilluy is growing. Nicolas Sarkozy had made Fractures françaises (“Champs”, 2013) his bedside book during the 2012 presidential campaign. This geographer, who set out in search of a working-class France, now regularly visits Manuel Valls and François Hollande. He works as a consultant for social landlords, local authorities, consultancies and associations of local councillors.

Une question de taille, Olivier Rey, Stock, October 8, 2014

Today, we measure everything from stock market trading volumes to cholesterol levels, from the density of fine particles in the air to household morale. But the more our societies indulge in this frenzy of measurement, the less likely they are to respect measurement, in the sense of fair measurement. This book sets out to describe and understand the ways in which, over the last few centuries, we have lost the ability to measure. Whether it’s a question of our relationship with nature, politics or ethics, it’s imperative to take this into account if we want to lead a genuinely human life, and avoid everything being destroyed.

Olivier Rey is a CNRS researcher, mathematician and philosopher.
