Art, prestige dining and the great names of haute couture all under one roof – and what a roof it is! For the third year running, Dior, led by Raf Simons, is organizing the annual Guggenheim Gala, the event of the autumn. <\/p>\n

The Guggenheim is located at 1071 Fifth Avenue. Inaugurated in 1959, the space’s aim was to exhibit non-figurative painting, devote itself to the avant-garde and open visitors’ minds to new forms of art. Taking as its starting point the works collected by the Gugghenheim family, the project expanded, with museums gradually springing up all over the world. Next step: the opening of a museum in Finland and the Arab Emirates. <\/p>\n

Now a benchmark, the museum attracts numerous donors and patrons who wish to encourage creation and support modern and contemporary art. For the Gala International 2015, to be held on November 4 and 5, Dior is joining the event. Under the aegis of the house, this mundanity has been modernized. Celebrities, fashion muses and cutting-edge musicians bring a new energy to the charity gala concept. Last year, The XX performed at the opening pre-party, watched by the likes of Marion Cotillard and Zo\u00e9 Kravitz. <\/p>\n

This year, Canadian singer-songwriter Grimes will give a musical performance on the opening night. Inspired by underground electronic music, the young artist’s latest album has been described by the NY Times as “one of the most impressive albums of the year”. An audacious choice, which underscores the interest of Dior and the Guggenheim’s Young Collectors Council in contemporary artists who think outside the box. <\/p>\n

An innovative eye for art and its forms, a stance that is sometimes risky, this is what has nourished and animated the artists who will be honored at the charity dinner on November 5. Placing their art as a Holy Grail, a tribute to Kawara (who left last July), Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian and Doris Salcedo will set the tone for the dinner. The subjects of exhibitions at the museum, these three artists are like this place: avant-garde and unique. <\/p>\n

On Kawara, a contemporary Japanese artist, is famous for having painted a series of dates, day after day, since the late 1960s.<\/p>\n

Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian is a contemporary Iranian artist who works with geometric shapes, mirrors and mosaics. She combines the traditional with the modern, applying Iranian ritual techniques with the current of Western geometric abstraction. <\/div>\n

Doris Salcedo is a Colombian visual artist who creates works “in-situ”, i.e. constructed to suit the space they are to occupy. Take, for example, this stack of chairs, created for the Istanbul Biennial. <\/div>\n

The Guggenheim Gala, or GIG, enables the museum to maintain and renew its collections, as well as preserving the building.<\/div>\n
Sponsored by Dior, last year’s event was a great success, prompting Richard Armstrong (Director of the Solomon R. Gugghenheim Foundation) to renew the fruitful collaboration. This year’s honorary presidents will be Christina Baker, Phyllis Mack, Raf Simons, Jennifer Blei Stockman and Sydney Toledano. <\/div>\n
