The first part of this maxim, “strive for perfection in everything”, is the company’s watchword in all its activities, including the creation of a new model. The second part, “Start with the best and make it even better”, found its perfect illustration in the success of the Phantom Series II and Ghost Series II when both ranges were updated in 2012 and 2014. And when Rolls-Royce felt it was time to reintroduce an authentic gentleman’s Gran Turismo to the international scene, its conduct was dictated by the third part of Henry Royce’s maxim: “If it doesn’t exist, invent it.” And so the Wraith was born.
\nMore recently, it is the last part of this motto that has inspired Rolls-Royce’s design and engineering teams as they work to usher in a new era in the history of open-top luxury cars. In a segment comprised exclusively of models offering the most obvious of automotive compromises, the 2+2 seating configuration, Rolls-Royce has chosen to “demand excellence, and nothing less”. <\/p>\n
The result is the new Rolls-Royce Dawn<\/strong>, the only true four-seat luxury convertible in the modern world.<\/p>\n “The darkest hour of the night is the one before dawn”.<\/p>\n DESIGN<\/strong><\/p>\n 2+2 \u2260 4 Love at first sight<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The new Rolls-Royce Dawn offers an original, elegant silhouette with Rolls-Royce stature and presence. It is the most dynamic of Rolls-Royce models, with a certain charm and allure that add a finesse, sophistication and refinement never before seen in a coup\u00e9 cabriolet, combining serenity with the freshness of absolute freedom. Contrary to media speculation, the new Rolls-Royce Dawn is not a Wraith convertible. 80% of the exterior elements that make up the body of the new Dawn have been redesigned to adapt to the evolution of Rolls-Royce’s design signature and offer a genuinely contemporary structure for a four-seat luxury convertible. Exterior design<\/strong><\/p>\n The Rolls-Royce Dawn applies Rolls-Royce’s timeless design principles: a 2:1 ratio between wheel height and body height, an elongated hood, a shortened front overhang, an elongated rear overhang, an elegantly tapered rear end and a high shoulder line. The Rolls-Royce Dawn boasts an athletic silhouette, firmly planted on its wheels, muscular and ready to soar. The power of acceleration and the tension of the visible lines are underlined by all-new sheet metal panels without any curvature, creating a more refined surface and a more powerful silhouette, in the image of the mechanics it conceals. <\/p>\n Powerful and striking, the Dawn’s front end gives it a sensual yet edgy, almost virile appearance, while the boldly curved beltline gains in sensuality as it rises above the rear wheel arches, widening the track. A flared wake on the hood extends the Spirit of Ecstasy’s wings, evoking a plume of steam rising from the radiator and underlining the car’s dynamism. The high shoulder line, chunky rear pillars and tapered rear windows give the new model, viewed from above or from the side, a silhouette comparable to a low-slung hot rod. <\/p>\n At the front, the grille is recessed by almost 45 mm, while the front bumper is 53 mm wider than on the Wraith. This draws the eye to the front air intakes, giving the car a determined air, even when stationary. The design of the front grille contributes to the impression of tension that emanates from the movement towards the rear flanks, underlining once again the Dawn’s unique elegance. <\/p>\n The grille and bumper draw attention to the car’s horizontal lines, unlike other Rolls-Royce models whose vertical lines are more emphasized. The bumper now incorporates the license plate surround and a new lower central air intake. The latticework of the lower skirt is recessed and dyed black, helping to create an impression of depth that underlines that of the grille. Chrome fins reinforce the car’s aura of stability, adding to the other horizontal lines to draw the eye to the whole car and enhance the impression of power and robustness. <\/p>\n Looking at the sides of the Rolls-Royce Dawn, the eye is immediately drawn to its elegant profile. The soft top presents a perfectly harmonious and homogeneous silhouette, far removed from the concave lines or abrupt angles of other manufacturers’ soft tops. What’s more, the new wheels, available in polished 21-inch as well as lacquered 20- and 21-inch versions, make the Dawn a perfectly successful contemporary incarnation of Rolls-Royce luxury. <\/p>\n At the rear, the car’s flanks curve around the feminine curves before tapering towards the end, recalling the elegant silhouette of the first Rolls-Royce coup\u00e9 cabriolets, which sported a boat-tail-style rear end, but also the tapering lines of the splendid early twentieth-century speedboats that inspired them.<\/p>\n The silent opening of the soft top transforms the Rolls-Royce Dawn, giving its occupants the sensation of light bursting in like the dawn of day. In its version with Midnight Sapphire exterior and Mandarin leather interior, night becomes day as the sun’s rays penetrate the car’s interior, opening up the cabin’s convivial space to a vast world of possibilities. <\/p>\n When the roof is open, the Rolls-Royce Dawn reveals its full seductive power. In side view, the sharp angle of the windshield, the molding that contours the hips and the beltline that rises high along the flanks give an impression of fluidity and velocity. The shoulder line wraps around the rear seat like a jacket collar rolled up to protect the neck. <\/p>\n The stainless steel-finish beltline that surrounds the cabin borders the soft-top cover when the soft top is open, and also incorporates a high-tech brake light. Matching the stainless steel door handles, polished wheels, visible air outlets and front and rear bumper details, this jewel of ironwork contributes to the car’s rich, elegant exterior. <\/p>\n The soft-top cover itself is a masterpiece of modern craftsmanship. Covered in Canadel open-pore wood panels, which follow the U-shape of the rear of the cabin, it is a marvellous testimony to the technical expertise of the wood craftsmen and the craftsmanship of Rolls-Royce’s cabinet-making workshops in Goodwood, at the brand’s headquarters. <\/p>\n The wood soft-top cover, chosen by the customer to suit his or her taste, cascades down between the rear seats and flows around the cabin to cover the interior door panels, providing passengers with a warm invitation to step inside the Dawn.<\/p>\n Interior design<\/strong><\/p>\n Once again, Rolls-Royce’s characteristic doors have been redesigned for the cabriolet format. Imposing and elegant, they blend perfectly with the amplitude of the front fenders and the gentle curves of the body line, creating an elongated body and a plush interior. <\/p>\n Evoking the silhouette of traditional sports cars, these doors make it much easier for rear passengers to get in and out of the Dawn’s luxurious cabin. A rear passenger doesn’t just “get off” the Rolls-Royce Dawn, he or she can stand up and disembark as if leaving a Riva speedboat for a sumptuous private landing in Monaco or on the shores of Lake Como. <\/p>\n As you’d expect on a Rolls-Royce, the doors serve a very different purpose than simply providing access. Their other function, perhaps just as important, is to contribute significantly to the body’s power and robustness by integrating a one-piece front pillar. <\/p>\n Climbing aboard the Dawn, the first impression is of the four separate bucket seats that sit at the center of a sumptuous, elegant interior, combining wood and leather, whose lines are reminiscent of the silhouette of a slingshot in tension. The impression of tension that characterizes the car’s interior runs from the driver-side front pillar to the rear of the car, around the rear seats before returning to the passenger-side front pillar. <\/p>\n Like a barchetta, the cabin’s shape is reminiscent of a slingshot, ready to propel the car’s occupants towards the horizon, even when it’s standing perfectly still. The interior design reinforces the impression of acceleration and tension conveyed by the car’s exterior, offering a space of opulence, security and stability. <\/p>\n The Rolls-Royce Dawn features four comfortable, fully independent seats. An authentic four-seater, the new model makes no concessions in terms of comfort, whatever the seat occupied. The seats have been designed to underline the car’s dynamism, elegance and functionality, as has the full-length center console. The upper part of the backrests conceals the seat belts, which, together with the centre-pillarless body, highlight the slingshot Y-shape of the wood and leather-clad interior, with no interruption to its main lines. The wood trim on the flaps also matches the center console with its forward-pointing herringbone pattern, contributing to the feeling of acceleration. <\/p>\n The dashboard has been slightly revamped, with polished metal inserts applied one by one around the dials, evoking the precision of hand-crafted luxury watches, while the center of each instrument in matte chrome seems to float in the middle. Finally, the clock is adorned with a new motif incorporating the new model’s name. <\/p>\n ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY<\/strong><\/p>\n A silent ballet<\/strong><\/p>\n Without a doubt, the main technical innovation of the new Rolls-Royce Dawn is its new roof. To claim to be an authentic Rolls-Royce, the Dawn had to offer the same absolute acoustic comfort as all other Rolls-Royce models. But the only possible option for a Rolls-Royce was a textile top, for reasons of aesthetics, romance and brand image. There’s nothing more romantic than driving a convertible in the night rain and hearing the drops drumming on the roof. In talking to its customers, Rolls-Royce realized that this was also their opinion. <\/p>\n In opting for a canvas top, Rolls-Royce engineers embarked on an arduous task, for which it was inconceivable to make the slightest concession: to build the world’s quietest convertible. This quest for silence underpinned every aspect of the development of the new soft top, and by extension that of the new model. <\/p>\n First and foremost, the acoustic experience for passengers once the car was in motion had to be authentically Rolls-Royce, whether the roof was open or closed. The shape of the roof had to be elegant, harmonious and sensual, while remaining one of the widest roofs to cover a convertible. <\/p>\n The main feature of this soft top is the way it wraps around the rear seats and descends over the Dawn’s windows, seemingly lowering the car’s roofline and contributing to its low-slung silhouette.<\/p>\n Another distinctive feature is the small size of the rear window, whose carefully calculated proportions help to make the car a sanctuary of intimacy when the roof is closed.<\/p>\n Two main techniques have been employed to ensure that the roof is not only aesthetically harmonious and sensual, but also fulfills its function as a silent cocoon to perfection. A perfectly smooth surface combined with innovative English seams ensures that air flows smoothly over the car, creating no parasitic noise. Inside, the Rolls-Royce Dawn is as quiet as a Rolls-Royce Wraith – a first in the world of convertibles. <\/p>\n In addition, the opening and closing of the roof had to be both beautiful and discreet. The engineers went so far as to invent a term to describe what they wanted the roof mechanism to achieve: silent ballet. <\/p>\n And they succeeded.<\/p>\n Unfolding in perfect silence in just 22 seconds, as the car travels at up to 50 km\/h, this “silent ballet” delights the passenger’s senses as silence and isolation give way to sounds, lights and aromas from outside. Like the opening of an airlock, the Dawn lifts the veil on the outside world and offers its owner an additional convivial space. <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Bespoke Audio<\/strong><\/p>\n For occupants for whom silence is less important than being able to listen to music and enjoy themselves with friends, the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Audio system has been specially designed to meet the specific requirements of the Rolls-Royce Dawn’s configuration. Fine-tuned by Rolls-Royce sound engineers, Bespoke Audio is the most accomplished hi-fi system ever designed for an automobile, perfectly suited to the Dawn’s dual personality. <\/p>\n Whether the roof is open or closed, the Bespoke Audio system ensures a perfectly balanced acoustic balance and optimum performance. Sound engineers were consulted throughout the car’s design process to determine whether the proposed changes could have an impact on the audio system’s performance, a practice unheard of in the automotive world. <\/p>\n Sixteen independent loudspeakers, with both cinema and studio settings, deliver a pure, true-to-life soundstage. Two subwoofers located in the trunk complement seven tweeters carefully distributed throughout the cabin. The system uses a high-sensitivity microphone to constantly manage external ambient noise, ensuring that volume and sound settings are subtly adjusted to suit it, to deliver sound of consistently high quality. Loudspeaker technology also contributes to this by correcting the frequency and phase shift of each loudspeaker individually to homogenize the sound and avoid any risk of standing waves due to external influences. <\/p>\n A new era in convertible design<\/p>\n Not content with pioneering the design of convertible cars, Rolls-Royce engineers took advantage of the Rolls-Royce Dawn design to introduce a number of tailor-made innovations.<\/p>\n The main challenge in designing a convertible is to maintain high rigidity throughout the body, while keeping weight down. Torsional stiffness is essential to minimize the roll that is inherent in most convertibles, and to contribute to the car’s dynamic stability. <\/p>\n Numerous phases of testing and research were necessary before the engineers were completely satisfied. The team covered tens of thousands of kilometers of rough terrain to identify and eliminate potential problems. The result: a chassis that makes the Rolls-Royce Dawn the most rigid four-seater convertible in the world today. <\/p>\n This convertible features a completely redesigned suspension system that ensures characteristic body stiffness and mass distribution, providing unrivalled driving comfort and the famous Rolls-Royce magic carpet feel.<\/p>\n The new air suspension and active anti-roll bars, combined with low front and rear lift and a low center of gravity, ensure that this luxury socialite is extremely agile and easy to handle.<\/p>\n The Dawn’s wide, sensual rear flanks reveal a track that’s 24 mm wider than the Ghost’s on the rear axle, giving the Dawn a sleeker, more compact silhouette. What’s more, these wide hips not only add to the seductive character of this new car, but also underline the virile muscularity and strength evoked by the 180 mm shorter wheelbase. <\/p>\n At the heart of the Rolls-Royce Dawn driving experience<\/strong><\/p>\n At the heart of every Rolls-Royce model beats the same soul: the famous 6.6-liter twin-turbo V12 engine. Developing 570 hp (420 kW \/ 563 bhp) at 5,250 rpm and delivering 780 Nm (575 lb-ft) of torque at 1,500 rpm, the engine makes driving a Dawn an exceptional experience, further enhanced by a dynamic accelerator pedal configuration capable of delivering a 30% faster response when the throttle is at mid-range. <\/p>\n The Dawn lives up to the driving qualities that characterize Rolls-Royce models. The car’s steering provides fantastic feedback to the driver. The ride is both smooth and precise. At the wheel of the Dawn, a feeling of security prevails, even at high speeds, whether the roof is open or closed. <\/p>\n The result: the new Dawn is Rolls-Royce’s most powerful four-seater convertible to date, with a lower weight and greater fuel efficiency than the majority of 2+2 convertibles on the market, thanks to cutting-edge engineering.<\/p>\n Road grip is ensured by 540 mm (20″) diameter runflat tires. These tires enable the Dawn to run even when deflated for at least 100 miles\/160 km up to 50 mph\/80 km\/h before needing to be replaced. Steering control remains optimal, even when the tire is completely deflated. 21-inch wheels on ten-spoke rims are also available as an option. The use of runflat technology eliminates the need for a spare wheel, freeing up additional space in the luggage compartment. <\/p>\n Discreet technology for a smooth ride<\/strong><\/p>\n Like all the distinguished representatives of the Rolls-Royce range, the new Dawn is at the cutting edge of automotive design and construction. As such, it offers the driver a series of discreet technologies to enable him or her to make the most of the experience of driving a luxury car. The key: discreet locations for the car’s technical functions. In particular, the Dawn features the Spirit of Ecstasy rotary control, an intuitive and instantaneous system that provides immediate access to various media and navigation functions. <\/p>\n For example, letters can be traced on the surface to enter a destination or perform a media search, similar to the intuitive functions of a smartphone. A shortcut key conveniently located on the steering wheel enables the driver to operate the car’s various functions using a simple voice command. These two control modes avoid the need for multiple buttons and offer absolute ease of use. For example, simply press the button and say aloud “Go to Saint-Tropez”, and the car’s navigation system will calculate the quickest possible route. <\/p>\n The system recognizes Latin, Arabic and Mandarin characters.<\/p>\n The rotary control’s touchpad also offers the same gesture control functionality as a smartphone, allowing the driver to use “pinch and spread” to select an area of the screen or enlarge it.<\/p>\n Information from the revamped multimedia interface and navigation system is elegantly displayed on a new high-resolution 10.25-inch screen, and hardware and software processing speed has been improved to speed up route calculation.<\/p>\n An automatic speed control system reduces the need for constant adjustments of distance and speed to avoid slowing down, stopping and restarting. Drivers can now drive in urban traffic with confidence and serenity, relying on the system to manage and respond to changing traffic conditions, for example when entering a new road or slip road. <\/p>\n The new software dedicated to the radars and camera, located in the front bumper for the former and in the upper center of the windshield for the latter, is more responsive. The software also preconditions the brakes to prepare them for emergency braking. <\/p>\n In more unfortunate circumstances, the Dawn deploys a split-second rollbar system behind the rear headrests. A ratchet system holds the system in place. This rollbar system also protects the car’s entire glazing. <\/p>\n Satellite-assisted transmission<\/strong><\/p>\n The dynamism of the Rolls-Royce Dawn becomes even smoother with the help of satellite-assisted transmission, a technology that first appeared on the Wraith in 2013.<\/p>\n Satellite Aided Transmission uses GPS data to enable the car to see more than the driver, anticipating his or her next moves based on location and driving style.<\/p>\n The system uses this information to select the most appropriate gear ratio for Dawn’s 8-speed ZF gearbox, enabling the driver to make the most of Rolls-Royce’s 6.6-liter twin-turbo V12 engine and enjoy a perfectly smooth, natural driving experience.<\/p>\n When approaching a wide bend, the car is able to predict how the driver intends to negotiate it. \nStudying the convertible segment, and luxury models in particular, Rolls-Royce designers felt that customers were being short-changed. For Rolls-Royce, the 2+2 seat configuration is too narrow a vision of the cabriolet, and too much of a compromise. <\/p>\n![\"55e931b7ecc63\"](\"https:\/\/www.luxsure.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/55e931b7ecc63.jpg\")
It’s generally accepted that the 2+2 configuration comprises two front seats, one for the driver and one for the passenger, and two narrower rear seats for occasional passengers or children. The rear generally offers very little legroom, which is detrimental to the vehicle’s comfort and convenience. In the case of convertibles, the reduction in interior space is often the result of the manufacturer’s inability to meet two imperatives: accommodate the soft top while offering sufficient space in the rear. As a result, this segment is limited to convertibles that Rolls-Royce believes make too many concessions in terms of user-friendliness.
\n“At Rolls-Royce, we pride ourselves on creating refined cars that also serve as spaces for conviviality,” says Giles Taylor. “Imagining a car like the Dawn to be usable only by two adults on a daily basis is nonsense.
