Netflix arrived in France almost 1 year ago, and has not been as successful as expected. With subscriber numbers below estimates, the group plans to revise its price range upwards. The figures are not really clear: British research firm Future Source Consulting counts 750,000 users in France, while the Ministry of Culture claims 250,000. The vagueness remains. <\/span><\/p>\n

Whether it’s too attached to our television references, a little old-fashioned, or already has satisfactory video-on-demand services, all suppositions are on the table. One thing’s for sure: Netflix is still a hit across the Channel, and continues to produce quality series and offer a diversified program (although it’s true that the group’s proposals for its French market are less rich – the laws establishing a minimum time between theatrical release and broadcast on television networks are not innocent…). <\/p>\n

\"images-1\"<\/a> \"images-2\"<\/a> \"images-3\"<\/a> \"images\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The group that created House of Cards and Orange is the New Black has delivered some fine productions again this year:<\/p>\n

Bloodline, from the creators of the Damages series, deals with family ties and the secrets that surround them, in the heart of a Florida landscape that’s paradise-like but suffocating in the air.<\/p>\n

-Tina Fey’s sitcom: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. A series marked by the humor of the American actress. Whether you like it or not, some of the jokes are big enough to have a cult following! <\/p>\n

-The Us remake of Les Revenants: The Returned. A copy-paste that may seem of no interest to French viewers, but the quality of the acting and the meticulous direction must be recognized. <\/p>\n

I could also have mentioned Marvel’s Daredevil, Marco-Polo or Sense8, but Netflix’s capabilities are not limited to the serial format: the group also handles documentaries and is now tackling cinema. No fewer than seven films will be produced and released by Netflix before April 2016. Renowned directors and actors have been announced, including Brad Pitt, Adam Sandler and director Cary Fukunaga. <\/p>\n

Netflix continues to build its brand image around original content, offering a range of programs visible only on its platform. Netflix films will be shown in cinemas, but also simultaneously online. It’s a proposition that Netflix can afford, as long as the giant also produces the content. A new way of making movies? Above all, a new chronology, in which the big screen no longer takes precedence over other channels for distributing films. Films are available on the platform and in cinemas at the same time: a strategy that runs counter to traditional release times (around 3 months in the U.S. and 1 year in France). A death knell for the cinema economy? Death knell for small cinemas? <\/p>\n

Some will undoubtedly baulk at these new challenges to broadcasting schedules (not in the case of Paramount Picture, which is following the Netflix path), but cinema remains and will remain. If piracy, which allows rapid access to the most recent films; Blue Ray and flat screens with images of ever finer quality; have not signed the cinema’s death warrant, it’s because it remains a sacred place. It’s like a temple to which the spectator goes religiously, and enjoys the ritual of popcorn, red seats and pre-film commercials. Nothing can replace all that. <\/p>\n

\"FRENCH_CharacterTease_Abraham\"<\/a><\/p>\n

On October 16, Netflix will release the film Beast of no nation on its platform. A film inspired by the book by Nigerian author Uzodinma Iwela, tracing the itinerary of a child soldier. From his forced separation from his family, to civil conflicts in Africa, the character is confronted with the art of war. The portrait of a child soldier torn between fear and fascination. Directed by Cary Fukunaga – who directed the first season of True Detective – the film will be presented at the forthcoming Venice Film Festival, and will be screened at the Toronto Film Festival in September. <\/p>\n
