\nThe story begins with John Jacob Astor IV, heir to the Astor dynasty, one of the richest and most influential families in the United States. An avant-garde businessman, inventor and writer in his spare time, he remarried Madeleine, 18 years his junior, after divorcing her at the beginning of the 20th century. In order to be forgotten by New York high society, scandalized by this relationship, the young couple had no choice but to leave the city and move to Paris, where they took up residence at the H\u00f4tel Royal Astor, rue d’Astorg, today the Maison Astor Paris.
